5 Major Setbacks That Small Businesses Can Face

Starting a small business comes with risk. You have to put time and money into the operation, and there is no guarantee that it will succeed. In fact, small business failure is much more common than you may think; they are not just often documented.

If you want to keep your business running and prevent the possibility of losing it all, you need to understand some of the reasons why small businesses fail. Once you understand the common reasons for small business failure, you can start taking steps to protect your business from these issues.

In this list, we will look at 5 Major Setbacks That Small Businesses Can Face; some of the common causes of small business failure and what you can do to prevent them.

An Incomplete Business Plan

This is a common problem among first-time business owners. They have an idea for a business, but they haven’t done the work to create a complete business plan. With a business plan, you take your idea for starting a business and define all of the things you are going to do to make it a success.

Beyond an idea for the type of product or service you want to sell, you need to consider things like funding your business and the Unique Value Proposition (UVP) that is going to set your company apart from the competition. You also need to figure out who your customers are, how you are going to sell to them, and develop a marketing strategy.

Not Recognizing Your Limitations

As a small business owner, you accept that success is going to require a lot of effort. You are ready to work long hours, learn new things, and do whatever it takes to make your business work. While this is a good attitude to have, you will need to recognize that you can’t do it all and that you may need help.

One person can only work so many hours in a day before their performance starts to suffer. There are also several administrative tasks that may require the skills or expertise of a professional. Instead of trying to push your way through everything, try to recognize your limitations and hire people when you need help.

Trying to Grow too Fast

Growth is an essential goal for a small business. Still, it needs to be at a rate your business can handle, and This can be a problem for companies that experience early success.

The business owner sees the progress, and they believe that they need to invest heavily in growth to keep up.

While early success is good, and it can be a sign that growth will be needed in the future, you need to have a plan for growth.

If you try to expand too quickly, you might take on debt that you won’t be able to maintain, or you might not have the staff in place to manage the growth.

In the same way that you need a plan when you start a business, you also need a plan for growth. Take the time to conduct a cash flow analysis, do some market research, and develop a plan for sustainable growth.

A Disconnect with Your Customers

If the customers aren’t buying, there is no chance for your business to succeed. Small businesses need to make an effort to understand their customers and respond to their wants and needs.

In today’s business environment, this is easier than ever. You can check out customer feedback on review sites or on social media to see what customers are saying. You can also gain deeper insights by using customer surveys to get opinions.

If you are willing to listen to your customers, they can provide you with information that you can use to improve your business.

Poor Management Skills

A lot of small business owners don’t have experience running a company. They aren’t used to making the decisions that come with being a leader, and they have no experience managing employees or handling the finances of a business.

The only way to manage this problem is to take the time to learn how to be a company leader. Don’t avoid tasks that seem difficult or unpleasant.

Make sure you know what you need from employees and hire people that can do the job. If something is beyond your abilities, hire someone who has the necessary skills.

How To Build Employee Loyalty in the Workplace When You Are Just Starting

As a business owner, you have a lot of things on your plate. Keeping your employees happy and engaged, meeting deadlines, and creating a high-performing team is all on your list of things to do every day.

First and foremost, keep in mind that people don’t like to be bossed around; micromanagement is a No-No.

To get employees to want to work for you, you need to show them that they can trust you to do what’s in their best interest and that you come from a place that genuinely cares about them and their development.

Today, job-hopping has become the rave of the moment, and millennials would instead move from one place of employment to the other in a bit to seek better pay, better job security, or sometimes, even a more important-sounding job title.

Studies carried out by Forrester Research indicates that the average person would hold up to 12-15 jobs before the end of their careers.

About half of the employees in a typical business are actively searching for other jobs.

With statistics as dire as that, it is not surprising that many companies lose a third of their workers yearly.

According to research by the Centre for American Progress, employee replacements cost employers as much as 20% of the salary of an average employee.

The knowledge of this trend has pushed several companies to invest heavily in researching what leads to employees leaving their employment faster than expected.

One such program is in what has come to be called exit interviews – interviews conducted by HR with a staff member who is leaving a company to find out why they are going.

The thinking here is that if the business can understand the motive for the employee leaving, the management would strategically place the company to mitigate untimely staff exits.

While businesses can learn from these exit interviews, it appears to me that they are reactionary – amounting to locking the barn after the horses are gone.

True, there is nothing that employers can do to prevent staff exits, especially among the younger generation. Families can move, goals can change, and better opportunities may beckon.

However, it is not all gloomy as there are strategies that you can employ to keep most of your best people with you.

Let us examine five of them.

1. Infuse Meaning into What Your Employees Do At Your Business

It begins with the mission – Employees who see meaning in their work are the most loyal to their employers. In the inverse, employees will not be committed to their work if it doesn’t seem to offer the expected value.

Infuse meaning into what you do at your business. When employees cannot see how their involvement adds sense to your work, they will find it challenging to maintain levels of enthusiasm and commitment to the job at hand.

The idea that one is working towards a compelling vision can make your employees wake up with a whistle to their lips and walk with a bounce on their feet.

What is the vision that you have for the business? Can you share the image? Is it contagious?

A related factor here is in the genuineness of the employers. When leaders in an organization take actions congruent with their utterances, employees have more trust in them and are more likely to take ownership of the organization’s vision.

Going from that, when all in the organization, including leadership, have a thorough understanding of the organization’s core values and not just internalize it but take ownership of it, the employee stickiness factor goes up through the roof.

Gallup Research carried out a study where they found that about 83% of employees considered living a life of purpose and working for an organization that aligned with their mission and values as “very important”.

That same study found out that about 77% of employees who had a clear understanding of what their companies stood for indicated willingness to stay with their employer for at least a year.

2. Organizational Culture and Employee Performance

The culture of your organization has to be discernable to your team and reinforced in the communication pattern, actions, and behaviour of all, starting from the top management.

The dominant culture in organisations depends on:

  1. The environment in which the company operates
  2. The organisation’s objectives
  3. The belief system of the employees
  4. The company’s management style

A crucial part of company culture is reflected in communication between leadership and employees and among employees. Having a work culture where open dialogue is both expected and encouraged will be a key strategy in both your ability to attract and retain top-notch talent in your startup.

Managers should set a good example of leadership by listening, offering constructive feedback, and accepting practical suggestions from employees.

A part of your culture that may have a lot to do with employee retention is work-life balance. While your team may be agile and working at full throttle, there is an ever-present danger of burnout as a result.

Yes, a great work ethic is commendable. But it is also essential that managers ensure that their staff is getting enough rest and living an entire and meaningful life outside work.

Of course, you may have urgent deadlines to meet from time to time, which will mean that you work long hours and even late nights. That is expected in any business, most notably in one just starting. However, make sure that you offer compensation for the imposition into the personal time of your staff by giving them a day off or a late resumption.

Such compensations will signal your staff that you respect their time and value the sacrifice that they put into making the company a success.

Additionally, if telecommuting or flexible hours is practical for your business, you may want to consider it as it has a marked influence on employee retention.

3. Effective onboarding

When a new member of staff joins your team, you should set them up for success. Your onboarding process has a lot to do with how long a new hire eventually stays with your organization. Sadly, many organizations spend little time helping new hires fit in, which reportedly accounts for why up to 20% of new hires leave their jobs within the first 45 days of employment.

Active organizations take the onboarding of new hires seriously and ensure that they know how to carry out the job, fit into the company culture, and fit in socially and thrive in their unique setting.

This onboarding process ensures that new hires feel less like a fish out of water in their first months. Do they know how to get an ID, where to sort out insurance and health benefits, where to park if they own a car, what key acronyms are used as everyday words in your team?

It is also critical that you set up early wins for your new hire by giving them early tasks that can easily be completed and build up momentum from there. Those early wins improve their confidence in the job and their ability to deliver, which has a lot to do with new hire retention.

It is also crucial that you build a sense of community and ensure that new hires find their way and blend into the company and its culture.

4. Offer a competitive compensation plan.

Employees reasonably expect that they should be rewarded as much as they could make in a similar position at one of your competitors. If their pay is lower than the top of the industry, seek ways to make up for it by offering more perks. Generally, employees may feel undervalued when they have to receive less pay than they should.

It is also a given that employees expect to receive similar compensation to what their colleagues are earning, irrespective of whether they are poor at negotiating. In contrast, their colleagues are salary negotiating rock stars.

Some employers have taboo subjects, which include how much you are earning on the job. Openness about salary structure and benefits packages can make all those on your workforce have a clear understanding of their prospect at your business and how progression will affect their compensation.

Additional suggestions that can complement your compensation plan include offering a health benefit and pension package. You might also want to consider the end of year bonuses, which could be a percentage of profit shared among your staff.

Many employees have reported that additional perks have influenced their decision to stay on at a job, beyond their principal compensation amount.

5. Allow employees to take the initiative.

How well do you delegate, as opposed to micro-manage? When managers are willing to relinquish control to employees so that they can get the work done, it results in more confidence and retention.

Research has shown a 31% lower employee turnover rate in companies that allow staff to take more initiative in getting the work done as opposed to merely following instructions.

A key to earning loyalty from employees is showing them that you trust them to carry out their job diligently. If you are hovering over their shoulders, they will not grow into their space. While your desire to get things right might make you feel that it is a great idea to micromanage your team, it may just end up creating an atmosphere lacking in trust.

A better approach would be to help employees set reasonable goals, provide the resources and skills needed to get their job done and provide constructive feedback intermittently during and after the task to improve overall performance.

This atmosphere of initiative-taking should be ingrained into the culture of your organization and be considered as the default. Some organizations promote innovation and initiative-taking by incentivizing the generation of new ideas.

6. Maintain neutrality

Employees need to know that they can expect fairness from the management of their organization. One of the hallmarks of workplace fairness is neutrality. When employees come to you to complain about the actions of others, don’t be quick to take sides and pass judgments, neither should you try to belittle the concerns that have been expressed.

A sustainable approach is to respectfully listen to the concern and promise to check with the employee involved. Make sure you follow through on their fears and take firm steps to resolve differences.

While employees must know that you run an open-door policy and approach you with whatever concerns they may have, you must remain the boss by retaining objectivity in how you handle conflicts with team members.

When you always act in a manner that puts employees at ease when there is conflict instead of playing favourites, this will result in higher employee retention.

7. Invest in employee development

When employees have a sense of advancement in their job, it improves their feelings of job satisfaction as well as their prospect of staying long on the job. Your best employees will always seek ways to grow, and if working for you means that they become too busy to develop their skills and self professionally, chances are that they will leave you and move to a more promising opportunity.

Smart employers pay for employees to attend training, workshops, conferences, and similar industry events or even offer refunds for their enrollment in career advancement training.

Managers can try to get familiar with the short and long-term goals of employees so as to find out how they can help their team members reach those goals.

Familiarization with the goals of employees can help a manager know who to a partner who with on projects, so a mentorship relationship can be fostered.

8. Maintain a zero jerk policy

Many employees would report that they have left a job in the past because of a hostile work environment.

A surprising report from a study conducted by a Canadian university however shows that colleagues who observe abuse are even more likely to quit in protest than those who directly suffer the abuse.

The Workplace Bullying Institute defines Workplace Bullying as “repeated mistreatment: sabotage by others that prevents work from getting done, verbal abuse, threatening conduct, intimidation, and humiliation”.

If you have a staff member who loves being a jerk and getting on the nerves of colleagues, you can bet on one thing – it will eventually affect employee morale and force some employees to move on in a bid to maintain their peace of mind.

When you notice that an employee is a bully, whether this is perpetrated frontally or subtly, bring out your organizational policy on bullying and make sure that the staff involved sees what the relevant sections say. If they refuse to change their behavior, it is better to let them go than to disrupt the whole team.

Applying these suggestions to your new business will help you hire right and keep the new hires satisfied for the long term.

How To Close A Sales Deal Fast

The goal of just about any company out there is closing sales and growing revenue – fast. This is because business is a game of both numbers and speed. The higher the number of transactions that you bill for, the higher the turnover for the period.

Your ability to shorten the sales cycle will therefore lead to explosive growth, the very fact that ongoing sales determine if a business remains in business can make a sales closing conversation with a prospect a nerve-bending experience.

Just a misplaced sentence or two and the prospect could ask to delay making a decision for some months, make an offer at a price level that you cannot agree to, or worse, accept a competing offer from one of your competitors.

Let’s look at some simple ideas/strategies that you can build into your sales flow that will both help you close sales cycles fast and help improve your closing rate.

While most of these ideas may be suggestions you are familiar with, you may have not been implementing them in your business and this must have cost you a lot in closure rates. It doesn’t matter what your products or services are,if you have a well-structured sales process, the results will be seen in your rate of closures, and in meeting your revenue projections.

Always put this somewhere close to your heart – When it comes to sales, the customer MUST come first.

Below are some of the most effective strategies that top companies use to close sales faster than others:

Do your research

Before starting out on a sales project, it is important that you start with a thorough in-house research so as to have an in-depth understanding of your services and offers and how they provide value to your customers. This also means that your research cannot end in-house. You cannot provide a solution to a problem that you do not fully understand.

How To Close A Sales Deal Fast

You don’t need to be stealthy about the research you are carrying out on the company. Your prospects want solutions to the challenges that they are facing; so, feel free to talk to the point of contact at the company to get as much details as they can freely share about their situation. If you can get access to other employees in multiple departments, start off conversations with them to gather more background. This will allow you to create a presentation that has depth and that considers the big picture of the organization’s goals.

While it may seem counter-intuitive that I am recommending that you conduct a thorough research when we are looking at increasing your closing speed, it really isn’t. Never put yourself in a situation where you go into a sales call without having an end game clearly in mind.If you have gotten to the point where a phone call is necessary, arm yourself with details of your prospects before you touch the dial.

Instead of just doing hit and run on strange businesses, focusing your sales pitches on prospects that you have a thorough understanding on will significantly improve your conversion rate as well as improve the efficiency of your sales process.

While the company website can give you information about the prospect, you have to go beyond just their site and see what you can learn about them from the web. Additionally, you can use data enrichment tools to quickly mine more information about your prospect which an ordinary Google search may take you too long to process.

The duration of time that you spend on research is dependent on the length of the sales cycle in your industry. However, it will be time well spent as it impacts on the whole sales process.

Know your ideal customer

Who are the best customers in your business? This is very important information to have as it can help define where you focus your efforts. When you put your sales effort on the type of prospects that has been the revenue source for your business, the result is a predictable boost in sales productivity.

Additionally, the more you know about your ideal customer, the easier it becomes for you to close them. This is because you would have become familiar with their pain-points, the likely objections to your offers and the features of your service to lead with.

Qualify the prospect

Extending from knowing who your ideal customer is, your salespeople should only make calls to pre-qualified prospects. Running after weak leads would end up wasting precious sales time on people who may never convert to customers.

If you want to know how to close deals more efficiently, this is it! Define who qualifies as a lead well in advance to both your marketing and sales teams and have a clear checklist that your people use to measure any prospect they are considering.

You could even use automation to filter prospects so that as they take actions across your channels, they gradually qualify themselves until they get to a point where they popup in salesperson’s dashboard as a qualified lead.

Here are some questions that you may use as a basis in setting up your automated lead scoring system:

  • What is the lead’s industry?
  • How many employees do they have?
  • What’s the annual turnover?
  • Did the lead initiate a follow-up request?
  • What challenges is the lead struggling with?
  • What context does one see about the firm from data enrichment platforms?
  • What call to actions did the lead engage with?
  • What pages on the website has the lead visited?

By combining optin landing pages and some automated behavior-based segmentation with insights derived from data enrichment tools, your lead qualifications can mostly run independent of human contact, and your sales people will only be fed with qualified leads to maximize both their efficiency and productivity.

Deal with the decision maker

Who signs the cheque? That is who your salespeople should be talking to, that is, if they can pull off that coup. However, that is not always possible as in real life most decision makers insulate themselves with a retinue of assistants, junior executives and so on. The more efficiently they handle interaction with the gatekeepers, the sooner your salespeople will have access to the decision maker.

In whatever industry you may find yourself, your sales cycle will become shorter if your salespeople can get in front of decision makers earlier than the competition can.

Earn the trust of your prospect

Show your prospects from the very first interactions you have with them that you take them seriously. Most businesspeople drop the ball here. This is a worst case in Nigeria where some have engrained the notion that if you are early to a meeting then you are desperate. Never keep clients waiting. If you say you would give them a call back at this time, do it.

If it needs using a scheduling software to get your appointments right, then use one. In fact, use an alarm clock if that is what works for you! But whatever you do, make sure that you keep your word even in the small stuff.

Additionally, do not be one of those salespeople who would say black is white just to gain access. Establish a reputation early in your relationship as someone who has integrity and does not cut corners.By saying establish a reputation, I am not talking about setting up a façade of honesty that sticks out like a sore thumb due to the variance with everything that you say and do.

When your client catches you trying to pull a fast one on them, it is highly unlikely that they will ever extend the privilege of trust to you again, not to talk of going ahead with the deal.

Create a sense of urgency

When there is urgency, things get done faster. It is a good habit to establish a deadline when you initiate negotiations for a sale. It helps you in two ways. First, you will close the deal faster if the prospect is ready, and second, it will help you avoid wasting valuable time with a prospect that is not just there.

A deadline assigned to a deal increases the motivation of the prospect to close and protects your most valuable resource – time.

A way of handling this without appearing to be putting too much pressure is by offering a discount if the transaction is handled within a certain time-frame.

Be ready to handle objections

Being ready to handle objections is what true preparedness is for a sales call. You need to think early about what likely objections will come up during your call and decide on how those objections will be handled. This is because if an objection derails your conversation and you have to take time out to research a solution, you may have lost momentum that had been gathered thus far, meaning the prospect will be less likely to close than if you had been more effective initially.

I suggest bringing your sales team together and having them come up with as many objections as possible. Then, as a team, decide on how best those objections can be handled. That process is what Tom Searcy calls “landline map”. When your people can anticipate objections that they may likely face and can clearly articulate a thoughtful response to those objections, they reduce the likelihood of their sales call ending with a “No!”.

If a prospect has any objections, be careful not to sound overly rehearsed in making a response. Listen to the prospect attentively; then proactively address their objections without giving the impression that you are minimizing them. You may even want to ask a couple of questions to clarify what their objections are, as a way of emphasizing that you take the objections seriously.

Ask for the sale

No matter how well you apply all the other strategies we have suggested here, if you do not ask for the sale, the prospect is very unlikely to beg for the privilege of buying from you.

To improve the confidence with which you handle the decisive moment, here are some closing approaches that you may want to employ:

  1. Unless you still have concerns that we have not addressed, it appears that we are a good fit and are ready to begin. When do I come with the contracts?
  2. If we can find a way to handle the concerns that you expressed, would you be ready to sign the sales contract by [date]?
  3. Based on the considerations we have discussed, I would say that either A or B are the best options for your use case. Which one do you prefer?
  4. If you make a deposit now, I can have the contract mailed to you before the close of work today.

Build follow-ups into your sales process

Have you ever sent a quote to a prospect and then never heard back from them again? What was your response? A lot of salespeople would just move on without skipping a bit, and then complain later that they are getting very poor conversion rates!

With this simple technique built into your process, you will close more deals, guaranteed with almost no additional effort on your parts.

Most prospects who do not get back to you may have completely forgotten. Some may have proceeded on vacation and forgotten about the quote sitting in their email. By taking a few seconds to say, “Hey Emeka, did you get a chance to review this?”,you may open the conversation again and potentially increase your success rate.

A software like Jobber allows you to automate the quoting process, as well as the follow-up to ensure that no prospect falls through the cracks.

As you can see, sales is more art than science. Try to implement these ideas in your industries and let us know in the comments what kind of results you are able to deliver.

How To Grow Your Business Innovatively

According to Wikipedia, Innovation in its modern meaning is “a new idea, creative thoughts, new imaginations in the form of device or method”.

Innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs.

Look in the mission statement of most businesses – tucked somewhere in there, either in its actual form or its many synonyms, is the word “innovation”, or its most similar word, “creativity”.

Most entrepreneurs may want nothing more than being perceived as innovative or at the cutting edge of something disruptive. But, just as hanging photos of nutritious meals on the walls of your kitchen does not make you dish out nutritious meals from your kitchen, innovation will not come from just talk. Innovation is an active word and it takes work and practice to become innovative.

Discussions about innovation are often made difficult because people are unclear about the exact meanings of some key terms. In particular, there is confusion about the difference between creativity, innovation, and invention.

Let us start with some definitions:

Creativity is the capability or act of conceiving something original or unusual.

Innovation is the implementation of something new.

While Invention is the creation of something that has never been made before and is recognized as the product of some unique insight.

Like many other businesses out there, you may find innovation to be a valuable trait that should be identified with your business, but your corporate culture may be steeply anti-innovation without your even knowing it. Read up on how to adjust your company culture here

This is not surprising, as creativity and a culture of innovation does not pay in the short term, and most businesses are obsessed about cost, efficiency and short-term metrics that will have an immediate impact on the bottom-line. Hence, the body language of the organization may just shift the focus on pushing short-term metrics up, with expectations of management focused on the need to do more with fewer resources. So, more structures are put in place to improve stability, rather than innovation that could end up being a time waster.

But it is important that business founders keep in mind that the strategies required to grow a business are not the same with what is required to keep the business from going, well, out of business. And, when one pulls to the left to ensure stability and predictability, it is important to have a measure of rightward push to foster an environment that can produce an innovative leap instead of just a gradual incline of improvements.

A business that focuses on the short term will likely get short term results, while a business that focuses on both short-term metrics and long-term innovative practices will embed long-term sustainability and ongoing profitability into the business.

This awareness requires a shift in the mindset of the business owner and the willingness to play at the fringes of uncertainty and risks, albeit at a measured extent. The business climate now in virtually all industries is too competitive and dynamic for any business owner to assume that business can go far just by playing it safe. In this knowledge and sharing economy enabled by the internet, your competition may even be from the other end of the globe, which may spell doom if you are just another local player.

This blog post will explore how you can infuse innovation into the culture of your business to ensure that you stay at the head of the pack no matter how many winds of change blows on your industry. While innovation comes with some risks, not innovating is even riskier. This post will present you with a measured manner of planning and implementing innovation to foster a creative environment for your business.

You cannot force innovation to happen

This needs to be said.

Most companies that attempt to implement an innovation program at their business fail.

What are the unsuccessful CEOs doing wrong that is sabotaging the innovation efforts at their businesses? Something to keep in mind is that innovation is not something that you turn on like a switch. It takes a gradual effort for you to seed an enabling environment for innovation and creativity to thrive. An innovative culture is one that supports the rapid creation of bold ideas and the seeking of creative ways to make things that are already functional better.

Sadly, when some entrepreneurs start an innovation program in their businesses, they expect immediate results which sometimes end up in their eventually micromanaging the program to death.

However, just because innovation should not be micromanaged does not mean that business owners are supposed to completely hands-off control. An innovation culture is one that fosters both the creation of innovative ideas and the implementation of those ideas. Hence, leaders have a responsibility to ensure that their employees see innovation as a core aspect of how business is done in the organization. You can’t achieve that without some element of oversight, measurements, optimization and strategy.

See innovation as a skill

Consider innovation as a competency that can be studied by anyone who joins your team and applied systemically.

Innovative companies treat innovation as a core skill like they would treat skills like leadership and integrity. Companies that are serious about their innovation culture make this a core part of job interviews to ensure that candidates coming in have a mindset of trying things out, or at least are willing to imbibe that mindset.

Larger companies may see the need to have innovation experts within your teams to guide them on their implementation path and enable their success. The role of these experts would be to conduct periodic or even regular trainings on creativity and innovation practice, and steer the innovation strategy of the organization in the right direction.

Additionally, you should incentivize innovation within your organization, both in terms of results from innovative practices as well as of the effort that employees put to be innovative.

See Innovation as a competitive edge

Businesses are always faced with the challenge of finding some way to engrain competitive advantage over their competitors. Finding that way may often be the difference between the success of the enterprise, and certain failure. One sure way using a competitive advantage in today’s hyper-digital and connected world is by using innovation.

Innovation is the act of being one’s fiercest competitor. That is why it is so difficult to imbibe it as a culture. If one does not innovate to stay ahead, one’s underbelly is opened to the sharks and the results can be devastating. When others out-innovate your business, it could lead to severe job losses if not an outright closure of your business. Remember, candlemakers did not invent the lightbulb, neither did horse breeders invent the motorcar, nor did the postal services invent the email. That is why creativity and innovation is critical in running your business. Horse breeders may have been focused on the horse breeder down the road, not seeing clearly where the disruption would come from.

In hindsight, we all have foresight. The question is; would you have known what to do when you are distracted by the day to day running of a complex organization? Many established businesses struggle to innovate out of fear of ruining a good business. They follow the adage, ‘don’t fix it if it isn’t broken!’, and that leads us to the next topic we are going to address.

Stop Doing What Works

Are you proud of your company’s products, processes, and services? Well, I have bad news. You need to trash them in favor of new ones – incessantly; whether they are still working fine or not.

As radical as it sounds, this is where most innovative companies start out. An attitude of dissatisfaction is inevitable if we are to truly implement a culture of innovation in our organizations.

This is what Joseph Schumpeter called creative destruction. The endless cycles of product and process creation which see new products replace older ones. He coined that term in 1942 and described it ‘the essential fact about capitalism’.

Let’s talk a bit about this.

If you were a competitor looking to upstage your industry, what would you do? It is likely that you would consider your existing products, services, and processes with a view to seeing how they can be dramatically improved.

So, are you going to sit around there feeling satisfied with your efforts so far, while some hungry and relentless upstarts are spending sleepless nights strategizing on how to capture your market?

An innovative startup has the mindset of continuous product and service cannibalism. If there is a way this product or service can be improved to become faster, better or smaller, then it better be us who come up with the improvements rather than one of our competitors.

And the kind of thinking that is bound to keep you on your toes is asking yourself, what products or services will make us money in the future? What advantages will cloud-based distributed platforms with their global ecosystem have that could be a threat to our business? What will we do when The Big Four – Google, Facebook, Apple or Amazon – comes after our business? You see, no industry is completely free from these four. How they impact your field when they eventually make a detour your way? What aspect of your business should new investments go to ensure that technology does not rip the carpet from under your feet soon?

Give your people permission to try

Innovation thrives when supported actively by management. It is important that your people know that it is okay to try to do something in a new way to come up with faster or better products. Put structures in place to ensure such tinkering do not stand in the way of short-term profitability since the business must survive in the short-term to be able to achieve long-term sustainability. That said; each employee in our team should be aware that they have a level of creative autonomy to think independently and find new ways of solving both existing and future problems. While great leaders are generally good decision-makers, they know that it is counterproductive to hire people and make all decisions for them – so your organization should prioritize listening, mentoring and trusting of your people to do the right thing.

Understand that it is okay to fail

If you are starting an innovation culture in your business, it is important that you keep in mind that most of the ides that you will get from your people are not going to be great. And even for those you thought were good, there is also a good chance that you will fail in the implementation. You see, if you are not failing often, it likely means that you are not innovating enough. Fostering innovation comes with the assurance that most of what you try may not pan out, but the few that do pan out will often make the difference. As successful as Tesla is, every year they abandon tens of millions in research programs for products that turned out to be duds. But you bet that they will never stop innovating! This also means that when they fail in their efforts to innovate, no finger-pointing or blame games are allowed as long as ethics and safety principles are not compromised.

Measure the right metrics

You may often hear people use the expression “You can’t manage what you can’t measure”. While we all know that data is useful for strategic decision making, how do you measure an abstract like an idea, or a culture of ideas for that matter? It may be very difficult to do that, and your success may well depend on how mature your processes have evolved.

Measuring innovation requires a different set of metrics than traditional business metrics that your may have been using. Keep in mind that here you are looking out for indicators of what will be useful to your organization in the long run.

These kinds of metrics will enable you to see if you are recording enough innovative activities, and whether those activities are getting enough results. Some key input metrics to watch out for here include the amount spent on R&D as a percentage of sales, the number of innovation projects started, the number of overall ongoing projects, the number of employees that have been trained in creativity and innovation, and so on.

On the other hand, output metrics that you can monitor in your organization include the number of innovation projects that lead to major product or service outcomes within a given period of time, revenue and earnings attributed to new products, cost savings as an outcome of innovating on processes, and the return on investment of innovation activities.

Eliminate Unnecessary Bureaucracy

The long lag times associated with bureaucracies in especially in large organizations put unneeded speed breakers in the path of innovators, making it frustrating and a major demotivator for innovative practices to thrive. While not relinquishing control completely, it is important that if leaders are serious about embedding a culture of innovation in their businesses, they must consider eliminating bureaucracy as their number one job.

An example that comes to mind immediately is a former colleague of mine who mentioned avoiding potentially rewarding event trips because of the burden of paperwork and frustrating approval process in his current organization. If innovators must thrive, they must remain at the cutting-edge of their industries. Hence, such processes end up as a killer disincentivized innovation in his organization.

Support Cross-Functional Team Collaborations

The final factor I will consider is the need to get units and departments collaborating on projects together. Teams should not be straight-jacketed based on roles; neither should they be put in competition mode where information flow may be hindered across units as a means of maintaining an edge. While the intentions of pithing teams against each other may be seen as a motivator, the prize is paid in innovation.

This even holds true when different organizations collaborate on projects. An example that buttresses this fact is a study that involved 10 mature tech companies who collaborated on a number of projects with each other.[1] The study found a correlation between collaboration levels and innovation levels that was too significant to ignore. The more the collaboration levels recorded, the higher the number of patents that were produced at the end of the project.

The highest collaboration level resulted in 18 new patents and participants rating of 9, while the lowest collaboration levels produced no patents and the participants rating was 2.

Takeaways

·       Leaders should encourage failure in their teams as a breeding ground for innovation. If you are not failing often, then you are not trying hard enough.

·       Be a cannibal and rip out your best products – then make them better.

·       Measure how you are doing, then reinforce what works.

·       Collaboration, not competition.

Can you think of any additional ways leaders can create a culture of innovation other than those I’ve mentioned in this article? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

How To Start A Water Business In Nigeria

Water is life (little wonder, Pour Me Water by Kizz Daniel was a major hit).

Let’s talk about Water Business, how to start a water company, produce bottled water, and operate down the value chain for commercial gains. But before we delve into the nitty gritty, allow me to give you a bit of core insight in summary of what it involves.:

The water bottling business involves sourcing, treating, bottling, and distributing water for consumption. Here are some key aspects of this industry that you need to know:

  1. Sourcing: Water can be sourced from various places, including natural springs, wells, or municipal water supplies. The source significantly impacts the water’s quality and the treatment required. It is also important to take the necessary measures to locate your bottling facility where you can source quality water. If you must get a borehole, find the
  2. Treatment: The water is typically treated to meet safety standards. This can include filtration, UV treatment, reverse osmosis, and the addition of minerals for taste. The treatment process depends on the initial water quality and the desired final product.
  3. Bottling: After treatment, the water is bottled in various sizes, from small single-serve bottles to large multi-gallon containers. The choice of packaging material (plastic, glass, etc.) can impact the product’s market appeal and environmental footprint.
  4. Branding and Marketing: Branding is crucial in the bottled water industry. Many brands differentiate themselves through source stories (e.g., mountain spring water), health benefits, or environmental practices.
  5. Distribution: Bottled water is distributed through retail channels, direct delivery to homes and offices, or online sales. Efficient distribution is key to profitability due to the low margins in this industry.
  6. Regulations: The industry is subject to various health and safety regulations, which can vary significantly by region. These regulations ensure the safety and quality of the bottled water.
  7. Environmental Impact: The bottled water industry faces criticism for its environmental impact, particularly concerning plastic waste and the carbon footprint of production and distribution. Many companies are focusing on sustainable practices, like using recycled plastics or more eco-friendly packaging.
  8. Trends: There’s a growing trend towards flavoured, mineral-enriched, or “functional” waters, which offer additional health benefits or enhanced taste. The demand for premium and artisanal water brands is also increasing.
  9. Economic Considerations: The bottled water industry is highly competitive with low profit margins, making scale and efficiency crucial. It’s also influenced by factors like consumer preferences, public health trends, and global events.
  10. Challenges: Challenges include managing water sources sustainably, addressing environmental concerns, and navigating regulatory landscapes. There’s also competition from public water supplies and other beverage sectors.

Note: Entering this industry requires careful consideration of these factors, along with a solid business plan and market research to understand local demands and competition.

This article is primarily to teach you how to start a water company for a commercial water packaging business; whether it is sachet water (Called pure water by most people in Nigeria) or a bottled water business, it is important to understand your market and the regulations around the production of food and beverages in your chosen market.

Note: Water (chemical formula H2O) is an inorganic, transparent, tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless chemical substance, which is the main constituent of Earth‘s hydrosphere and the fluids of all known living organisms (in which it acts as a solvent).

To start a water bottling business in Nigeria, you must obtain the right license from NAFDAC, after which you could then consider other business factors and forces that would determine the business model that best fits your planned production.

The water business has a very long value chain from which anyone might choose to start from and make a lot of money.

Bottled water businesses take different forms – You could choose to operate at several points on the entire value chain. You could choose to deal with bottling and distributing drinking water to consumers as a business. Whether purified, distilled, or natural spring water, your bottled water business will supply your customers with the necessary hydration to keep them alive.

How To Start A Bottled Water Business In Nigeria

According to a new report by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation – World Health Organization, billions of people worldwide are continuing to suffer from poor access to water, sanitation and hygiene.

If you are looking at starting a bottled water production or water bottling business and you need a bottled water factory business plan, then you will find this guide on how to start a sustainable bottled water production business an invaluable part of your preparation process.

Call it a bottled water production feasibility study, if you will.

With the right management practices, one can make significant returns on investment and even break even within three years of investment. The average Return on Investment (ROI) for bottled water production is about 300%, and any figure short of that means there is a leak somewhere in management. Find it and fix it.

So what are the options available, and what steps does it take to set up a bottled water production line for clean bottled water?

Total Time: 15 minutes

Conduct Adequate Market Research

The first step in conducting any meaningful market research is to decide what you need to find out.

However, take note that what you must find out must be centred around making your customers happy and saving the reasonable cost of getting your product out there.

Many entrepreneurs have lost their business capital, taking a stupid leap of faith into their business without adequate market research – that is Suicidal!

It would be helpful to keep in mind that bottled water is generally a commodity product. Except for a few luxury brands of water, bottled water is a commodity product that requires a high volume of sales for you to turn a profit.

Therefore, it is important that you consider the market size and delivery infrastructure that you will leverage if you are to cover a geographically wide area.

Keep in mind that it is best to situate your bottled water business close to heavily populated areas where access to the market will be much cheaper, instead of having to ship your products a long distance which will erode your profits.

Before you begin your business, you need to know the following at the very least:

1. Where your market is.
2. Who exactly are you selling to
3. What is the size of the market
4. Who are the competitors
5. How well are these competitors doing in the market
6. What is going to be your strategy to claim market share from them

Other factors to keep an eye on while carrying out your market research would be the pricing tactics of competitors. Are they positioning with a cost-competitive advantage? If that is the case, are you competing with them on cost or planning to enter the market as a luxury mineral water brand?

Carry out a complete bottle water production feasibility study so that there is a clear picture of what you are up against and how you are going against it. If writing a feasibility study is well over your head, do not hesitate to spend money to hire a business development professional to provide you with this service. Don’t stint on this – you are spending money on equipment and space. All that will be wasted if you do not get the feasibility part right.

Write a Business Plan

Now that you have locked in all those learning on the business opportunity and the strategy, it is time for you to put it all down in a comprehensive business plan.

Sections you would typically have in a business plan of this nature would include an executive summary, market segmentation, marketing plan, management team, legal requirements and business location analysis.

This business plan will come in handy when you want to raise funds from investors to back your new business. But, even if your project is self-funded, your business plan will act as a roadmap of how the business will proceed, opportunities it would capitalize on, challenges it would face and how it would surmount them.

Without doing this critical step, you risk treating your capital like out-of-pocket cash, only to gasp when you run out of cash and half of what needs to be done is yet to be done.

Decide on a project location

This is a critical decision and not one to be made in a hurry. In selecting a site for your bottled water manufacturing project, bear in mind that access to your market will be a major factor in determining your profit levels.

And even when a site is accessible to the market, it may still be unsuitable for a bottled water production factory. Keep in mind that bottled water is a consumable product, hence you should take note of the hygienic conditions of the proposed site.

For example, NAFDAC food safety regulations prohibit the siting of a water packaging factory close to a cemetery, abattoir, wood mill, oil depot or sewage plant. Due to the high potential for contamination of your water source from such environments.

Also keep in mind that NAFDAC requires that a bottled water production facility has a cloakroom, packaging materials store, production bay, finished goods store and an administrative office. If you are not building a purpose-built facility, you have the option of renting a sizable facility and resizing it to fit the purpose.

Get The Needed Licenses

After deciding on a location, the next thing to do is start the process of getting government approvals and necessary licenses for the factory.

In Nigeria, that means getting in touch with NAFDAC and having them inspect your premises and give you their license. You may also need to visit the food safety department of the LGA, where the factory would be situated to get their appropriate permits. These are not optional requirements – your business would be sealed off, and you may face criminal charges if you proceed without this step.

Something else you need to do at this stage would be to get the business registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. NAFDAC would require that you present evidence of this registration during the application process for a NAFDAC number.

Additionally, you do not want to forget the taxman. Handle relevant registrations both at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office and at your State Inland Revenue Board office.

Buy and Install Needed Equipment

You have the option of either purchasing equipment outright or taking out a lease. Equipment needed for the takeoff of a water bottling factory would include power generators, bottle loaders, bottle filling and capping machine, water purification unit, conveyor belt, filling machine, storage tanks, and delivery trucks.

You will also need to install a borehole in the facility. Note that an existing borehole may not be suitable if you are converting an existing structure to a bottled water factory. This is because NAFDAC requires a minimum of between 100-150 feet, depending on the topography of the factory site.

The water source must also be a minimum of 30 feet away from your septic tanks for obvious reasons.

Drill a Borehole or Get Other Suitable Sources of Water

It costs ₦120,000 to ₦650,000 to drill a borehole in Nigeria.

Borehole drilling is the most efficient and common way to have a constant water supply. It can either be done through a manual drilling method or a heavy-duty drilling method. Meanwhile, the average price of the manual drilling method is from ₦120, 000 – ₦300,000, while heavy-duty drilling costs ₦250,000 – ₦650,000. The cost of materials, location, and also the number of contractors could affect the price of borehole drilling.

Get Your Bottles

Of course, you need a custom bottle for your water to at least make it a bit difficult for counterfeiters to fake your bottled water. A safeguard is to make sure that whichever bottle manufacturer you engage is a member of the International Bottled Water Association.

Ask those who are already in the bottled water business for recommendations. You could also browse online and do your due diligence on companies that come up.

Part of what you should consider while researching bottle suppliers should be the price, quality of their products, and the reliability of their supply.
You don’t want a supplier who will tell you stories when you are low on bottles. That could mess up your supply obligations.

Hire The Right Employees

Hire people who know their way around the machines you are installing. You have spent significant amounts on purchasing these machines; you don’t want to be left with an avoidable liability due to incompetent machine handling. If your employees would need the training to be able to handle the equipment, ensure that they get it efficiently.

Unlearn: The Art of True Learning – ExpertsNG

You, like everyone else you know, are a product of conditioning.

Just like in the movie, Matrix, while growing up you unconsciously took either the blue or the red pill. Unconsciously, you have been acting out the conditioning set by the pill you took.

Without a doubt, you are a product of an intricately interconnected system managed by our society – Yet, even our society is conditioned to function the way that it does.

The world we live in now works on principles adopted decades ago, mostly during the industrial revolution era, when we were conditioned and taught to learn skills and get jobs to earn a living wage.

The problem, however, is that the world we would live in the future, would not function with the dictates of the world of the present, nor that of the past.

Unfortunately, in spite of the constant change experienced in the world today, a majority of us, especially in Africa has refused to keep up with the change.

Why must our education remain stagnant if the world is changing? In Nigeria for example, though minutely developed the system of education has remained unchanged for over three decades.

What we learned from our parents, from school, from society, etc would all be obsolete in the very near future, they could all be totally irrelevant. The first step in finding a way out of the impending mess is to consciously accept this as a fact and do something about it.

You may have been told constantly of the need to learn something new; a skill, a new dress sense, a new diet, something new. Something to make you function effectively now. Learning new skills is fine, the issue is that to effectively learn what would make you relevant in about ten years from today, there is the need to first unlearn the negative bias that you have been conditioned with.

Here are five ways to effectively unlearn:

  1. Acknowledge and accept your fears
  2. Challenge what you’ve been taught
  3. Break the habit of thinking that you know
  4. Always look for evidence that what you know is true now and would be true in the future
  5. Have Faith In Yourself To Achieve Your Goals

Acknowledge your fears and accept the challenge

One of the things that I find very gratifying is the fact that I work best with a deadline in view especially when there is an imminent loss if I do not perform to expectations. I do this by acknowledging and embracing my fear of loss.

My senses go to hyperdrive and my need to learn comes to the fore. It happens simply because I do not want to associate with the loss that would come if I do not achieve my set goal.

Unfortunately, most people acknowledge their fears but do not learn to embrace them. They rather give up and give in to their initial conditioning of weakness.

Studies suggest that It takes three and a half months to wipe away a lot of bad conditioning and recondition anyone with the attitudes and behaviours that lead to entrepreneurial success.

If you embrace your fears and decide on success, you can learn with structured repetition, any skill needed to get you from where you are now, to where you need to be.

Challenge what you’ve been taught

Being able to admit that you’re wrong or need to unlearn and relearn what you have been taught, what you had always seen to be true, takes some self-awareness and the ability to put your ego aside.

In this ever-changing world, one of the problems I’ve seen commonly in the education sector is that professors find it hard to accept that they are wrong. They are mostly stuck in their past and not wanting to acknowledge that the norms of the past may not be right in the present.

Typically, what stands true today may not necessarily stand true in a decade from now. Look at it this way – imagine the embarrassment of thinking that you know something and being totally wrong. It is always safer to question everything, and even when you think that you are right, it is safer to constantly ask yourself the question – what if I’m wrong?

Your ability to question what you are being fed with will really help you to unlearn and learn new things.

Break the habit of thinking that you know

Our education system rewards the smartest and shames those that do not know. That is what we all have been conditioned with. We, therefore, go about our businesses and putting up the front of knowing everything.

We often act based on what we think we know first. Unfortunately, such a stance robs us of information. Taking the stance of not knowing will force you to look at things differently; to seek new information and speak with other people with the intent of learning from them.

You are never the smartest person in the room.

Always look for evidence that what you know is true now and would be true in the future

It is human nature to take in information, and we do just that naturally through everything around us. What is not common, however, is to question the authenticity of the information we take in.

As humans, we find it easier to base our judgment on emotions instead of evidence. To effectively unlearn anything therefore, it is better when you have and rely on sound evidence that an old way of thinking is false and replace that thinking with something new.

Have Faith In Yourself To Achieve Your Goals

You won’t get this anywhere else – My definition of the word skill.

“A skill is the product of your resolve to unlearn” – Akinyemi Olufemi

If you have ever read the book Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki or listened to any of his interviews, you would easily find out that financial status and social class are passed down through generations – You unconsciously inherit your class-bias and mindset.

One of the mindsets most people inherit from their parents, society and school is self-doubt – they are conditioned to believe that certain things are outside their intellectual or social class. You must, therefore, unlearn what you’ve been conditioned with and believe in yourself and your ability to achieve set goals.

Don’t give up too soon, always have faith in your own abilities.

Change Your Circle of Friends If They Don’t Discuss Money Often.

Change Your Circle of Friends If They Don’t Discuss Money Often.

Have you ever heard the words – “Your network is your net worth”?

Friends that do not discuss ideas that can help you generate money would either get you broke or may not be able to bail you out if you get broke. Your friends determine your value, choose them wisely.

I bet you have heard a lot of quotes on money. One such quote is – “Money can’t buy happiness”. Well, I’ve got an advice for you, if you believe a bit of that, you need to stop reading this article, right now. Who believes such in this age and time anyway?

Of the many money quotes out there, the one that I find to be so hilarious is “Money is the root of all evil”. That statement has so gotten into the heads of the majority of people in our society that it has become taboo amongst some friends to discuss their success stories.

Most friends now find it easier to let their friends know when they are not doing well financially, but unable to tell them when they are successful and making more money than their peers

What is even worse is that some friends do not want you to talk about your success stories when you are around them. This may sound odd, but did you know that you will eventually get to be affected by the energies given out by your friends? Friends who feel bad about your success would do anything possible to pull you down.

Friendship is an elevator – It is either taking you up, or taking you down. It is therefore imperative to choose the friendships you go into carefully.

Here Are 5 Secrets To Help You Find Productive Friendships:

Change Your Circle of Friends If They Don’t Discuss Money Often

Define What You Want in A Relationship

Take some time to evaluate your relationships. There is no better way to know what you want than to evaluate yourself and get to truly understand you. By evaluating yourself you would be in a better position to set the right expectations for your relationships, know what you lack, and what is needed to achieve your expectations.

Most people expect the best from their relationships but only a few define what they truly expect and know what it takes to get what they expect. Learn to define your relationships and you would not be easily disappointed by your friends.

Take control: Evaluate Your Friendships

Unlike family, you have the power and the right to choose the people you mingle with. Without mincing words, we get affected by the energies of the people closest to us – Our friends.

Studies have suggested that having solid friends can help us live longer and thus by extension, having toxic friendships may affect our life’s expectancy level. It is important to always take a step back and evaluate the friendship you are in.

While evaluating, however, do not forget those good friends may also have their bad moments. What you should look out for is how often those shaky moments come and if you are getting as much as you are putting into the friendship. If you feel that you’re not getting out as much as you’re putting in, and you find yourself thinking hard on this regularly, your friendship could be unhealthy, or even toxic.

No Unnecessary Freebie For Friends

Years back, I went into a business relationship that became a friendship. We met through a mutual friend of ours. I was told that he was having some issues with his staff and he needed to get them trained so I was called in to help train his staff.

Somehow, our business relationship turned into a friendship and he was somehow able to pull me in to fill the void created by his staff, the one whom he sacked after I trained them. It turned out that the said staff lacked the qualities the organization needed to grow.

Long story short, we became friends and I agreed to stay and fill the void while he does everything to get the staff replaced. Unknown to me, my newly acquired friend did nothing to replace his staff and he managed to keep me in a rat race. I received no compensation for my work and all I did was work for a friend, freely.

Do not get caught up in such a rat race – friends who would not pay you for your professional services are not real friends. Every true friend should support the other to grow. Seriously, Change Your Circle of Friends If They Don’t Discuss Money Often.

Associate With Friends Higher Than You

Some researchers have suggested that you cannot be richer than the average wealth of 5 of your closest friends, in fact, your net worth tends to mirror that of your closest friends. It, therefore, means that it is better to always associate with people on higher levels than yourself if you ever want to take your career, or business to the next level.

One of the benefits of moving with people higher than you is that they affect your mindset positively and expand your mind to greater possibilities. It is natural to feel most comfortable with people who are like you or below you, and that is not so much of a bad thing.

However, no one ever gets rich within a comfort zone, it is good to step outside of your comfort zone once in a while and spend time with people who can expose you to greater things, new friends and useful that you may not have gotten fro mingling with friends on your level.

Give what you expect to get.

If you expect great friends, you first have to be one yourself. If you live by the Golden Rule of treating others as you would want to be treated, then you won’t be disappointed — you will find your friendships fulfilling and rewarding.

Do your friends meet the criteria above? Can you call any of them your purpose partners? If so, then great! If not, then it’s probably time to branch out and start establishing some new relationships. With the secrets above, you can boost the quality of your relationships and your long-term success.

It is almost the end of the year 2021. I bet like most people, you also started the year with some resolutions. Hey, did you keep to them? I bet No.

Earlier in the year, I noticed that it would not be easy to keep to resolutions, so I chose to set goals instead. My goal for 2021 was to start the ExpertsNg blog. I, however, toyed with the idea for so long that I kept postponing it until late in June of 2021 when I penned down my first words.

If you are like me, I bet you chose to set goals and probably have one goal pending at the moment. If your goals are sales-related, I’ve got good news for you – We are getting into the biggest sales period of year 2021 and you can still surpass your sales target.

This sales period starts at the last weak of November and stays up until the second week of January the following year. It normally starts with the USA Thanksgiving holiday that brings with it the black Friday sales rush.

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving and companies and business owners alike offer massive discounts to attract customers. In 2018, Black Friday sales hit $717.5 billion in the US and this is expected to grow at about 16% in 2020.

Nigeria is not left out as we have also joined the bandwagon and now celebrate all possible discount periods worldwide, including Black Friday.

What is unique about Black Friday is that it kickstarts the holiday season and indeed the shopping frenzy for the holiday season.

So, If you are yet to meet your sales target goal for the year, you have the best opportunity yet to meet it during this season. The question is if you are prepared and know just how to get things done right.

Here is a list of 5 steps to your biggest sales this Black Friday:

  1. Get Your Products / Services Right
  2. Get your sales-funnel right
  3. Advertise your sales offering
  4. Automate your processes
  5. Build an active customer care structure

1. Get Your Products / Services Right

If you cannot explain your product or service to a 10-year-old, you probably do not have a well-defined product or service. Your ability to define your products will determine how you position it and how customers see the value in them.

Remember, in marketing one of the essential success factors is your ability to get a sellable product, with such product well priced and suited to the place you intend to sell to.

2. Get Your Sales Funnel Right

As a business owner, you do understand the place of marketing and the need to keep selling. Without sales, your business will eventually collapse from inadequate cash flow challenges.

To make sales, you must learn to attract the right set of customers, and understand marketing’s importance and how to persuade customers to buy from you. The best way to get customers and be very good at it is by understanding and utilizing sales funnels.

A sales funnel is a strategy that is so named because of the shape it takes when represented by a diagram. Learn how to build your first sales funnel by clicking here

3. Advertise your sales offering

Note: Advertise, not entertain.

The purpose of an advertisement is to work on the thought process of your prospective customer; affecting the way they think about your value proposition, more like to educate and persuade them on your offerings, with the end result being that they open their wallets and buy from you.

“The first step to affecting the way your customers think is to make them look at what you offer in a new or different way. A good ad has the power to completely change the mind of the reader, viewer or listener”

The level of AI integration to sales and above have been significant. If you must jump on a bandwagon, this is certainly one with a destination, by all means, jump on it.

5. Build an active customer care structure

While a lot of business owners believe that it is good practice to build an active customer care structure, only a handful actually invests in customer service management.

Ideas Don’t Count Execution Does

At first glance, you may have the illusion that what determines a company’s success are their big ideas, products or the services they render!

Customer is King, Listen To Them.

However, company success is determined by her sales figures – her profit. So without sales, a company will eventually fizzle out. So, it, therefore, means that the customer is truly king. As such, the company-client relationship is possibly the single most important factor at play in determining business success.
