{"id":14659,"date":"2020-03-19T01:46:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T00:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/?p=14659"},"modified":"2021-09-14T11:21:51","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T10:21:51","slug":"encourage-female-entrepreneurs-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.experts.ng\/blog\/encourage-female-entrepreneurs-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Empower and Encourage Female Entrepreneurs in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap has-regular-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/opinion\/2018\/11\/29\/women-entrepreneurs-the-future-of-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Worldbank (opens in a new tab)\">Worldbank<\/a>, contrary to what some may expect,  Africa&nbsp;is the&nbsp;only continent&nbsp;where females are more likely than males to choose to become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it is true that both male and female entrepreneurs face many constraints, women typically, in addition to other constraints, have less access to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fundingcircle.com\/us\/resources\/small-business-loans-for-women\/\">startup capital<\/a>&nbsp;than their male counterparts. These constraints impede the growth of their businesses due to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.mastercard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/MIWE_2018_Final_Report.pdf\">fear of failure<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, as a result of social exclusion and preconceived notions about the role of women in society, female-owned businesses often have relatively small workforces. It is estimated that women-owned businesses account for over one-third of all firms, and they are the majority of businesses in the informal sector in African countries. <strong>Source:<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Publicprivatedialogue.org (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.publicprivatedialogue.org\/workshop%202008\/Gender_Entrepreneurship_Competitiveness%20in%20Africa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Publicprivatedialogue.org<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To fully appreciate the role of women in the development of Africa and its entrepreneurial landscape, it is important to fight the social stereotype mindset that has kept the female gender at a disadvantaged position in spite of her heavy presence, especially in the private sector. Although enacting significant social change takes time, understanding the following points (and acting on them) is key to taking steps towards greater and more effective inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-think-of-them-solely-as-women\"><strong>Don\u2019t Think of Them (Solely) As Women<\/strong>.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it may seem counterintuitive, if you want to empower female business owners in&nbsp;Africa, it is essential to acknowledge the unique strengths women possess, as well as the unique challenges they face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an understandable attitude. However, it can prevent women from achieving full equality in business. Designating women as&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/socialtheory\/2017\/10\/07\/the-historical-tradition-of-othering-women\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cthe other\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;when compared to men results in an implicit hierarchy. Women are perceived as being different from men, which can oftentimes lead to them being regarded as less capable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re an African female entrepreneur yourself, or simply someone who wants to support other female entrepreneurs, it\u2019s crucial that you don\u2019t make the mistake of categorizing solely based on gender. Every individual is unique. They should be judged based on their own merits, not any theoretical qualities associated with their \u201cfemaleness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"mindset (opens in a new tab)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/nigerian-mentalities\/\">mindset<\/a> allows you to begin thinking of women as colleagues. For example, perhaps you\u2019ve learned of a male tech startup founder seeking a business partner. Who knows, maybe they\u2019ll even go on to serve better than their male partner on that particular role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-support-policy-changes-in-africa\"><strong>Support Policy Changes in Africa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adjusting your attitudes towards female entrepreneurs in\u00a0Africa\u00a0is essential. That said, it is also crucial to identify and support policy changes that can facilitate the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/advisory-board-of-directors-for-small-businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">female-run businesses.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, governments can offer tax incentives to women growing businesses in critical industries that help them pay for training and other startup costs. Such incentives help to bridge the opportunity gap, while also fostering the growth of a more diverse workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, women should be made aware of networking organizations they can use to support one another, such as the<em>&nbsp;<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/fcem.org\/pays-membres\/asie-pacifique-orient\/afrique\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Association of Cameroonian Business Women<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<\/em><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anwbn.org.ng\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Association of Nigerian Women Business Network.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participating in such organizations doesn\u2019t merely give women the chance to cultivate professional connections, by connecting and organizing, they can more effectively identify policy proposals deserving of their support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-speak-up\"><strong>Speak Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some societies traditionally encourage females to be less outspoken than males from the time they are children. Such societal norms cum culture hurts business prospects in the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it may not come naturally to someone who has been conditioned over the course of a lifetime to refrain from speaking up, as a female entrepreneur, growing a business in&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;requires advocating for yourself. You need to promote your strengths and aggressively pursue clients to succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though <a aria-label=\"un-learning (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/the-need-to-consciously-unlearn\/\" target=\"_blank\">un-learning<\/a> behaviours is rarely an easy task,  as a woman, and as someone who wants to support female entrepreneurs, you need to shift your mindset.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"background-color:#ffbfb5\" class=\"td_text_highlight_marker\">Suggested Read:<\/span><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/the-need-to-consciously-unlearn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Need To Consciously Unlearn (opens in a new tab)\">The Need To Consciously Unlearn<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At networking events, meet with other women to discuss your tactics for self-advocacy. Although, it becomes easier when women coordinate, learning to speak up for your business is less of a struggle when you learn from each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t neglect the importance of this point. Again, many female entrepreneurs in&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;have spent lifetimes being told they are not to seek attention and recognition to the same degree as males. When female business owners are more willing to promote themselves, it sets a strong example for other women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-identify-inspirations\"><strong>Identify Inspirations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the points in this article is meant to suggest that African women have never <a href=\"https:\/\/experts.ng\/blog\/business-tips-for-startups-to-scale-their-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">succeeded in business<\/a>. On the contrary, there are many historical and current examples of female entrepreneurs overcoming the odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider the story of\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Folorunsho Alakija (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/folorunso-alakija-01077512b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Folorunsho Alakija<\/a>. Although she began her professional career as a secretary, she eventually quit pursuing her interest in fashion design. She ultimately went on to launch the immensely successful\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/goodblacknews.org\/tag\/supreme-stitches\/\"><em>Supreme Stitches<\/em><\/a>\u00a0fashion line (and becoming a billionaire in the process).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her story is merely&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.africa.com\/top-african-female-business-leaders\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one example<\/a>&nbsp;of an African woman succeeding as a business owner despite not having the initial opportunities other entrepreneurs may have had. Studying such cases, and sharing them within your professional network, doesn\u2019t merely inspire other budding female entrepreneurs; it can also help them identify how past women have overcome certain obstacles, and how they can do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The most crucial point to remember is that action is vital<\/strong>.
