7 Reasons Why Businesses Fail in Africa, With Examples

2

Did you know that about 80% of businesses fail in Nigeria within the first 5 years? This post is an expose on why businesses fail in Africa, with examples of such business failures.

Several reasons are attributed to why businesses fail in Africa, especially Nigeria. In summary, some of the widely known reasons are:

  1. Mismanagement of funds/Showoff
  2. Government Policies
  3. Cultural factors
  4. Poor succession plan
  5. Black tax
  6. Lack of Fund
  7. Lack of Focus

Let’s learn a thing or two from one of Nigeria’s entrepreneurs – here is something from Sheriff, perhaps we might learn a thing or two on why businesses fail in Africa from his experience.

In a 2016 medium post titled “12 Years a Hustler, Time to Go Home”, Sheriff Shittu broke the news to everyone. Barely two years after launching, Showroom.ng was shutting down.

Here is an excerpt from the highly emotional post –

I really felt I could succeed; I have read the right books, the right blogs. But in execution and drafting right business plans, I have fallen short. Maybe it’s time to change things a little, something is quite wrong, I think.

Sheriff founded showroom.ng to serve as a place for people to shop their furniture needs. In other words, it was also a place for carpenters to showcase their works to potential customers (hence the name, showroom).

The showroom story is one of many in recent years. Businesses are getting started really quickly in Africa these days, and so are businesses shutting down at about the same rate. This has been a compeling reason for business owners to want to know why businesses fail in Africa.

USA today said 80% of businesses fail within the first year of operation. That’s a sad one. But it gets even more painful knowing how bad things are for companies in Africa.

Now, there are generic reasons why businesses fail everywhere in the world. However, there are some peculiar reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

Let’s try to explore all of them together, and in the end, you’d do the sorting yourself. Shall we?

Reasons Why Businesses Fail in Africa

Mismanagement of funds/Showoff

Mark Zuckerberg and Jack Dorsey, CEOs of Facebook and Twitter, have both visited Nigeria in recent years. Mark came first in 2016, and Jack followed suit three years later.

There was so much buzz on social media about each of the two visits, and one of the topics discussed then was how simple they looked. Their appearance made news because it didn’t fit into the flashy appearance of typical African CEOs that we are used to.

In this part of the world, once a business witnesses some level of success, the next thing most CEOs start to think about is how to make sure it reflects in their lifestyle. Never mind that they still owe investors. The unnecessary showoff from business owners in Africa has been attributed to one of the major reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

The first obvious way this affects the business is that it draws from the capital. This new expensive lifestyle is not going to pay for itself.

Secondly, this sends the wrong message to potential investors. No investor would want to put their hard-earned money in the hands of a lavish spender. Without doubt, most investors know that the mismanagement of funds is one of the main reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

Government Policies

Africans are not so lucky in terms of political leadership. The kind of people we have as leaders here would fold their hands and let you toil your way to success on your own. The moment your business starts to show signs of success, then you see them associating with you.

The Lagos state government was quick to congratulate Flutterwave after their latest funding. But the question is what role did the state government play in this success. That’s by the way. At least this is a success story. Let’s talk about how the same state government killed about 3 to 4 startups with just one policy.

It’s a familiar story. Lagos state government shocked everyone when they banned motorcycles from plying most Lagos roads. This meant about 3 to 4 startups (Gokada, Max.ng, Oride) were forced to innovate or shutdown.

The above example is only an example of when a government policy comes directly for a business or an entire industry.

There are also times when the effects of such policies are not felt instantly but over time. For instance, the cancelling of auto-renewal in the mobile VAS industry.

Why Businesses Fail in Africa

Cultural factors

We, as Africans, hold our culture in high esteem. It’s one of those things that easily distinguish us from the rest of the world. But could it also be a significant contributor to business failures in this part of the world? Well, it seems so.

When people in other parts of the world say “no credits”, they mean “no credit for anyone irrespective of your relationship with me”. But you see, back in Africa, it’s usually not the same.

If a typical African man says “no credits”, what he is saying is “no credit for you except you are a family member or a close friend”.

As simple as this seems, it’s a fast killer of business.

Poor succession plan

Do you want to get an African man angry? Ask him about his plan for death, and you’d have succeeded in your mission. An average African would rather die than talk about dying (well, not literally).

The founder of Coca-cola died a long time ago. But guess what? The business is still very much in existence to date.

Other businesses that have something in common with Coca-cola are IBM, Ford, Pepsi, Nestlé. Bacardi, General Electric, and Procter & Gamble. And what do they all have in common? – they’ve all existed for over 100 years.

The founders and successive CEOs of these businesses can pull this incredible feat off because they all had a clear succession plan. In other words, they all recognised that a time would come when they would no longer be there to run the business, so they plan for a successor ahead.

On the other hand, over here, we don’t even want to hear about death. So, how do we plan for a successor? This also reflects in our political leaders’ behaviour who would rather die in office than hand over to a befitting successor who would carry on their “legacy”.

Black tax

A friend mentioned this term to me for the first time just about a month ago. Fast forward to today, and I’m writing about it as one of the reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

By the way, this is what black tax is – a form of support, common among Africans, that you extend to family members (especially extended).

The term originated from South Africa, but there is no denying that it’s a common phenomenon among almost all Africans.

Look around; there is poverty almost everywhere. Nigeria, for instance, is still the poverty capital of the world. Hence, family members tend to depend on the few people who “make it”. And when this “successful” family member has a business to thank for his success, such business may ultimately hit the rock.

Adapt or die! Sounds harsh, but it’s the truth.

The world is changing quite rapidly. Make that “rapidly” x100 since the last two decades. So, to stand the test of time as a business, you have to be willing to adapt to these changes. Even better – you should be able to predict the changes before they occur.

We talked about businesses that have existed more than 100 years earlier. Have these businesses lasted for so long by doing things the same way over the years? Of course, no.

For instance, look at how the Coca-Cola bottle has evolved over the years. And the physical appearance of the product is only one of the many changes the business has had to undergo to remain relevant.

why businesses fail in Africa

Lack of Fund

Money plays a vital role in the success of any business. And more often than not, this money has to come from outside in the form of investment.

These days, several African startups announce how much funds they raised in different investment stages. These stories create the impression that attracting investors is now so easy. Well, not exactly – judging by the number of businesses that folded up due to lack of funds (some in the examples below).

10 Famous African Businesses/Startups that failed

Dealdey (2011 – 2018)

Sim Shagaya is a well-known name in the Nigerian (and African) startup ecosystem. He is the founder of the famous eCommerce store, Konga.

In 2011, Sim Shagaya started DealDey – a Nigerian platform for daily deals. By 2015, DealDey was one of Nigeria’s biggest eCommerce stores, pulling a $5 million investment from Kinnevik.

However, things took a different turn sometime in 2015 when the startup had to lay off 60% of its workforce. It was later reported in April 2016 that Ringier Africa had acquired the company.

While no one knows why DealDey collapsed, a Facebook user (who has now deleted the post) claimed it was because they could no longer pay vendors.

Efritin (2015 – 2017)

Efritin, the Nigerian eCommerce platform for used goods, was reported to have shut down in January 2017. The startup was owned by the Swedish company Saltside Technologies.

Saltside CEO Nils Hammer revealed that high internet data cost, poor internet penetration and adoption and challenging economic conditions played critical roles in the business failure.

Meanwhile, before the shutdown, the company’s former marketing manager, Uche Ajene, had accused the former MD, Zakaria Hersi, of robbing the company of thousands of dollars and not addressing internal mismanagement.

Wabona (2012 – 2015)

Wabona’s mission was to make video-on-demand a big industry across Africa. The startup was founded in 2012 by two South Africans – Simukai Mukuna and Simbarashe Mabasha.

However, they had to close business in August 2015 after they could not raise follow-on funding coupled with the “uncertainty in the African video-on-demand (VoD) space”.

In the words of one of the co-founders, the business failed to find a scalable business model – “African VoD services are still struggling to find the best business model, and there is a platform bubble. In this kind of operating environment, it became tough for us to get long term funding,” Mabasha said.

Mxit (2004 – 2015)

In 2013, a South African social networking platform, Mxit chat, announced that its monthly active user base had grown to 7.5 million. However, this figure dropped to just 1.2 million in July 2015.

In October of the same year, Mxit finally announced it was closing its corporate operations, but the app would still be available for download and use. A year later, the app users reported that they could no longer send and receive messages.

Founded in 2004, Mxit rode the instant messaging wave even before BlackBerry Messenger, and WhatsApp became so popular with the advent of smartphones. The app was quite popular among South African millennials then in the pre-smartphone era.

Then, in 2012, it acquired Motribe – a platform that allowed users to build, generate and manage revenue from their social mobile website. However, it could not survive intense competition from international offerings such as Facebook and WhatsApp.

OyaPay (2017 – 2019)

Founded by three co-founders with Abdulhamid Hassan as the CEO, OyaPay’s sudden collapse is linked to a family investment gone wrong. According to Hassan, he had earlier taken a “small seed round from an uncle”. However, at the point of product-market fit where there was a need to bring investors on board, the uncle pushed back on the idea of diluting his investment.

The matter dragged for months, so he became frustrated and decided to quit.

There were Initial reports that Paystack had acquired the startup, but Abdulhamid denied it. However, he later joined Paystack, where he now works as the Product Manager.

GoMyWay (2015 – 2017)

GoMyWay was a Nigerian ridesharing platform. The business shut down its operations in October 2017. Their reason? Inadequate funds.

Damilola Teidi, CEO of GoMyWay at the time, said the startup couldn’t afford to proceed according to the initial plan of operating a free service for the first year or two.

“It does take a lot of resources to run this business, and the initial plan was no longer sustainable. The shareholders/investors concluded to shut down operations and close the business as there were no funds to invest further,” Damilola was said to have pointed out then.

At the point of shutting down, GoMyWay had gotten backing from several popular investors, including Konga’s founder and former CEO, Sim Shagaya, and former Naspers and Amazon executive Bill Paladino. Damilola went on to Nigeria’s CcHub as the Director of Incubation.

Showroom.ng (2014 – 2016)

As mentioned earlier, Showroom.ng founder and then CEO Sheriff Shittu made the announcement in an August 2016 Medium blog post. He decided to shut down the business after operating for two years.

Sheriff pointed out some of the reasons the startup failed, summing it all up into wrong execution.

In his words, “I personally won’t attribute the failure to wrong market or wrong product. It was a wrong execution”. Sheriff Shittu started the furniture marketplace in 2015. However, before Showroom, he had worked as a business analyst at Konga for a year and a half.

The business unfortunately fell prey to one or more of the reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

Nezal (2010 – 2016)

Nezal was a portfolio company owned by Ideavelopers. The startup was founded to turn social revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East into games and raised about $1 million in Series A investment. Ideavelopers led the investment in 2011.

However, Nezal’s founder and CEO, Muhammad Ali, has moved on to join Google as a product manager. Based on what can be seen on Ali’s LinkedIn profile, his timeline with Nezal, which he founded in July 2010, ended in April 2016. The business unfortunately also fell prey to one or more of the reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

ConnectMed (2016 – 2019)

ConnectMed, a Kenyan healthcare startup, is one of the latest to shut down within the African continent. In a March 2019 press release where the announcement was made, Melissa McCoy revealed that Merck took over ConnectMed’s intellectual property. That includes their telehealth solutions.

She added that “ConnectMed will cease operations” after the handover.

While in operation, ConnectMed, founded in 2016, launched three direct-to-consumer digital health products in South Africa and Kenya. Also, it served over 8,000 patients, including corporate clients. And it raised more than $300,000 in investment through prizes and grants mainly from the University of Oxford’s Skoll Centre, University of Cape Town’s Bertha Centre, Entrepreneur First and Katapult Accelerator.

The business unfortunately also fell prey to one or more of the reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

Tress (2016 – 2018)

Tress, a Ghanaian beauty startup, was one of Africa’s first startups to get accepted into Y Combinator. However, Tress’ website has long been taken down, and it last updated its social media over three years ago.

Meanwhile, one of the Co-founders, Priscilla Hazel, still has Tress as her current workplace on her LinkedIn profile.

According to the startup’s Crunchbase profile, they had raised at least $120,000 in funding. The business unfortunately also fell prey to one or more of the reasons why businesses fail in Africa.

In Conclusion

What’s even the whole essence of this article? Well, for you to learn from others’ stories.

Running a business successfully is hard everywhere but even harder in Africa. And the reasons for this have been mentioned.

By the way, it’s important to note that “failure” is not always a bad thing. Like motivational speakers would say, “sometimes you win, sometimes you learn”. In other words, failure can be a way to learn and get better.

There are stories of several successful businessmen and entrepreneurs today who had failed at different attempts before. But they kept on pushing till they hit success.

Having said that, it’s often better and safer to learn from other people’s experience.

5 Effective Ways of Eradicating Unemployment in Northern Nigeria

In September 2019, the Nigerian states Sokoto and Taraba had the most significant percentage of people living below the poverty line.

A higher number of northerners live below the poverty line with less than 137.4 thousand naira in yearly earnings (roughly 361 U.S. dollars).

How can we effectively eradicate unemployment in northern Nigeria? I’ll propose five ways.

Let’s talk history.

Poverty in View

Despite the abundance of natural resources, northern Nigeria still has the most destitute, and most are young people. In northern Nigeria, a significant consequence of unemployment in Northern Nigeria can be seen in the magnitude of crime, restiveness and insecurity. Most of them are partakers in heinous crimes that damage government properties, personal properties and probe danger to lives.

Poverty is an effect of unemployment. Unlike other advanced countries where the government is directly responsible for their citizens’ affairs, the Nigerian system does not work that way. Despite the improvement in the number of tertiary institutions, there hasn’t been a system that guarantees job security after school. Most of these youths receive their certificates after school and keep them someplace safe for future purposes. And these future plans are short-lived as soon as they recite their marriage vows.

A professor was speaking about mindset designers. He ran a comparison test between Northern Nigeria and Southern Nigeria, citing the example of his visit to Lagos during one of his travels. One thing that stood out was that most youths in Lagos were occupied in the hustle spirit early in the morning. He was impressed with the absence of idleness he saw as everyone was into one activity or the other. He hadn’t ever noticed something as intriguing as this among all his years in northern Nigeria. When he got home, he decided to compare by staring outside early the following day. He had woken up quite late due to stress from the last journey; he agreed to take a peek; what his eyes saw shook him hard, and then he said, “I know why we are destitute.”

The Real Problem

A significant problem causing the high increase in unemployment in northern Nigeria is the youths’ attitude to work in contrast with Nigeria’s other parts. They depend on the government for literally everything and have nothing to show for it.

Another problem causing severe unemployment rates is the “long leg” syndrome in most parts of Nigeria. Finding a great job depends solely on who you know and not necessarily your experience or skillset.

Regardless, things have changed recently.

With the shift in digital technology and creativity, finding a great job doesn’t depend on who you know. Have you found yourself in a similar position after school? Have you been praying for a miracle to happen to the countless number of resumes you’ve submitted to different organisations? Here are five effective strategies to ending unemployment in northern Nigeria.

Learn Digital Skills

If you are wondering what next to do after acquiring your National Youth Service Corps certificate. You are not alone; reality dawns every day on many Nigerians when they realise that life isn’t a bed of roses after NYSC.

Our university courses have a way they beam and assures you of the best after school. You might have bragged about the commercial potential your career choice had, and every other person needed clarity in choosing theirs. But after service year, your hope dims because, in reality, it’s as if you literally wasted four years in the university: no one wants your services.

Now is not the time to put your hands on your head to cry about your predicament; this is a time for you to do something about it. The future of work has been predicted to be digital; there are many skills to acquire. Since the Covid19 Pandemic, new job opportunities have been created. Companies are basically on the lookout for employees with excellent digital skills. There’s no harm in trying to veer off the tight path you stayed on in school; now is a time to learn a new skill that will actually settle your bills.

These days, there are free courses online on new skills to take on your new career path, and of course, there’s Youtube. I can’t stress how much free knowledge is available to you on YouTube. Channel your frustrations to learning and acquiring a new skill. This could either be a soft or hard skill, whichever works for you, do. Skilling up gives you confidence and makes you marketable. When trying to skill up, look at job openings and focus on their requirement description to better understand what your recruiters are looking for.

Take Volunteer and Internship Opportunities.

No matter how unrewarding this might appear, give volunteering a chance. Try finding charity organisations you can impact because, obviously, volunteering makes you stand out in your resume. Look on the bright side, it gives you opportunities to contribute to your passions, leverage to connect with professionals and keeps you busy. One way or the other, you gain on every side.

Volunteering enhances the personal skillset, attitudes and knowledge that can help job seekers in the labour market. The benefits of volunteerism even exceed the job market. Many fellowships, scholarships, and jobs require your leadership and volunteer experience to know how competent, employable, and better you meet their learning objectives.

The influx of internship positions springing up post covid 19 eras is impressive. The demands for applicants for internship position in organisations has created more space for well informed young people to make better decisions in enrolling. Initially, internships were requirements by universities to give fundamental industrial expertise to students. However, now it’s way more than that. Through apprenticeships, people get the opportunity to understand the processes of new businesses. At the same time, people are allowed to discover new job opportunities, build on their expertise, and eventually earn a company position. There are many openings for digital skills these days in different organisations. Some of which are paid and others are unpaid. However, internships give you better leverage than those without experience and probably might get you employed in the organisation.

Try Freelancing

Believe it or not, the freelancing industry continues to grow at record rates in the last couple of years. In fact, the freelancer industry reportedly grew by over 12 per cent, as noted by the Financial Times. Freelancing in Nigeria has grown as more graduates look for modern ways of earning a living. This is because of the technological shift the world has been experiencing; thus, new jobs have been created. It is evident that if you must succeed as a youth in Nigeria, there is no hassle in giving freelancing a shot. Here are ways to go about it.

●      Select a Skill

There are countless skills available today in the freelance industry, ranging from writing to programming. As an upcoming freelancer, it is your job to select a skill you know you can offer, develop yourself and position yourself as an expert in that field.

●      Build a Brand

As an upcoming freelancer, one thing you must know is that the competition never drops. You need to treat yourself as a brand and always show up on different social media platforms. There is a diversity of media; you could leverage the one that works better for you, including websites, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc. You must be willing to communicate your unique selling point to your audience because you need to appear as a brand they can trust with their money.

●      Build a Portfolio

One thing people look out for when scouting freelancers on apps and social media is proof of the services they have offered in the past. With the high scam rates in Nigeria, no one will want to “enter one chance.” Testimonials and portfolio increase trust in your service or skill.

●      Pitch: After you’ve got your skill or service, built a trustworthy brand with a great portfolio, the next step is to pitch your service to clients. This implies positioning yourself strategically to solve the specific problems of your clients.

Adopt creativity

Due to the financial crisis, many organisations in Nigeria had to reduce their number of employed staffs. This was also the case outside Nigeria; many people in the U.S. lost their job security.

Every young person’s dream is to make it big in life. A trend that went viral on the internet was the “2019; we go buy Benz.” Even if that year’s outcome wasn’t so pleasurable, one would understand that young people will continue to dream big despite the negativities that are hurled at them. Recently, millennials have created more jobs. Most of them are abandoning the traditional career choices and opting for new ones. Through creative thinking, more people have been employed.

A great example is that of a man with no painting history or skills but has a great creative mind for the colour combination. He charges over 200k for consultancy and has created a space for himself in the construction industry. There will be an excellent benefit if northern Nigerian youths can focus on similarly creating their own ventures. There are many job opportunities created due to these new ventures, and more will be developed over time. The best decision is to feed your mind with the right things to become better at thinking creatively.

Build a Profitable Network

A network is critical nowadays. Maintain professional contact with people who have gone ahead in your career and update your references list. Building your network is an excellent way of improving your net worth. Irrespective of what you aim to achieve in the business world, you need to find someone who could be a partner—the more extensive the network, the better. A network helps you to build your brand reputation. You could connect with great minds through different social media platforms, seminars, workshops, or even by buying their books or paying for courses.

Conclusion

I understand the difficulty in attempting to step out of the norm. It’s a leap of faith. You can create an empire for yourself – others are taking advantage of these opportunities. Weigh your priorities, set your goals and begin crushing unemployment. Best of luck.

10 Ways to Make Money as a Student in Nigeria: With Zero Capital

One of the top challenges of an average Nigerian student is money. How did I spend it? Where did it all go? More importantly, how can I make money as a student?

It’s never enough.

The first feasible solution is often the pressure to get a job because in some farfetched mathematical equation, the solution to money is paid employment. I laugh in adulthood.

Really the pursuit to make money never gets old.

Next comes the frustration from paid employment and their difficult work hours. That’s if you find one. Most formal job roles require graduate certification and even when you have that, there’s always the NYSC requirement.

Yes, Undergraduates aren’t the only ones finding it hard to make money.

Need I mention the peer pressure to make money through illegal means.

One often falls back to starting their own business. Then they discover the next challenge — capital to start a business. In the end it all boils down to money. The third challenge of a Nigerian student is lack of time.

SEE: Top Small Businesses in Nigeria

Let’s face it, between lectures and assignments and, God forbid, carry-overs, the money problem can be crazy, but the worse problem is a lack of idea on how to make money.

That’s what I’ll be discussing.

Here are some ideas that can fetch you money in school. Some require a bit of skill but don’t be scared, often times we already possess this skill but we are too afraid to even embrace them.

I’ll talk in detail on the different skills required to start each business. I hope you can make something out of any of these ideas.

Also, feel free to leave a comment if you can relate to the money struggle.

Ideas That Can Help You Make Money as a Nigerian Student

1. Tutor

Your colleagues are hardly going to pay you to teach them, neither will your juniors. Matter of fact, as a senior, you are obligated by the department to tutor students in lower levels. So that’s not what this is about. When I say tutor, I’m referring to lesson teachers.

All businesses are tied to specific environment. So no matter how rural, chances are there is a child in your radius that could use a teacher. All you need to do is convince their parent on the importance of your role. Sell yourself. Don’t Know how? Read my article on Closing Impossible Deals.

Remember you are a student trying to get by, so your charge is relatively lower than regular tutors or who cares if it’s higher. You know where the shoe hurts. Schedule lessons to suit your programme and voila, you have a reliable source of income and of course the company of children.

My elder sister was forced to open a Primary School when her small private lesson grew from two kids with zero knowledge in English or Maths to over twenty kids in three months. What she said to the parents was: “Your children are smart, they just need someone with patience to attend to them plus, the quality of primary education you can afford can’t give your children the attention they need to boost their confidence”. Not in those exact words.

Not long after my house became a congregation of all age grades. Toddlers whose mothers needed a break, spent their day on my bed or following my mum around the house. Everyone was duly employed – even my dad, and he hardly smiled! Yet children loved his company.

Keep your eyes on your grades while you are at it. You aren’t trying to start another primary school. Remember you have a degree to earn. Keep it small; except you can afford to pay your friends to assist.

2. Caregiver

Children can be needy. Avoid those age range. Have you considered being a caregiver to an senior citizen? Even if your school is located in the most remote rainforest in Nigeria. Chances are there’s an old fellow who could use your help with small chores and a meal. Every elderly person’s need differs. Except in severe cases were the client is bedridden, your role consist of cleaning and cooking and keeping tabs on their drugs and other safety issues.

Sort out breakfast and other house chores, go over for lectures, stop briefly for lunch and return in the evening for dinner and any other thing. You might be lucky to find a client that only needs your service a few times a week and some might include accommodation.

The role of a care giver can get complex depending on the needs of the client. WATCH THIS

3. Hairstylist/Barber

If all you can do is a simple cut, trust me you’d always find clients who need a cheap cut because just like you, it’s that time of the semester and they are too broke to get a standard fade on their punk. Same with a hair stylist. Go on YouTube, learn trending hairstyles. Chances are the girls in the hostel want to look expensive for half the price.

4. Makeup/Nail Technician

The demand for beauty standards keeps growing. As a makeup artist you might be limited to your school environment if it’s far from town because jobs can come at a time that clashes with your school work, but let’s focus on positives.

OOPS! Another downer. Makeup can be pretty expensive and demand may not be daily. Check out your environment as usual. If you can make a few thousands over the weekend, you can focus on your school work. Same goes for the nails. Girls will hunt you down a rabbit hole if word gets out that you make a mean nail art. You can learn from watching YouTube. Stop chasing IG stories. Burn data on contents that can help you learn how to make money.

5. Event Planner

I met a girl in NYSC and she told me how she started as an event planner in school. You need passion for this job. You also need to learn to convince your client that you know what you are doing. Mind you the top skill here is management. As an Event planner, your major role is to see to the success of the event. You source the right professionals that can deliver on projects. That’s your super power.

6. Writer

Writing is one of the most lucrative skills in this age. The sweet benefit of writing is that you can easily find jobs that enable you work remotely. You can be anything: a content writer, a copy writer, a script writer or even an editor. It helps to have a laptop but don’t let that stop you when you have a smart phone. Borrow a laptop if you need to, do anything possible to get the job done, save up, then buy a laptop. Like I said, every business has its fair share of challenges.

Your hands will burn but when people casually tweet “where ona dey see this money,” you’ll force a smile because you know how to make money as a student.

I’m just going to say this once. Novels are fun to read and can help you grow your audience, but you won’t make a million selling your self-published poetry collection on Amazon. I Know! However, you can improve on your skills by writing nonfictions like articles and stuff for websites.

7. Graphics Designer/ Illustrator

As with writing jobs, graphic designers are always in demand. Take advantage of your network. Chill on posting memes for a while, inform your contacts that you design graphics for a fair price and watch the power of recommendations. Never forget to add that you charge for your services. E get why.

8. Music Producer

Do me a favour. Tell your younger ones to turn their hobbies into skills. Advise that kid that likes camera’s to follow professional cinematographers on YouTube. Tell that child that likes to drum on everything to learn how to make music now! One of your favourite music producers studied architecture but taught himself to make beats while in school. That up-coming artist in your school sampled his beat and he improved on his work until top artists were willing to pay much more for his work. Need I say more?

9. Transportation

I got talking with an old friend that schooled in some University in Ghana and he was willing to share his story with me on how he made money as a student. His school was quite the distance from the bus park and he offered a solution that brought the drivers into campus to pick up students and he got the deal at a fair price. in his words, he was making so much money he stopped calling home nor did he go on holidays.

10. Tailoring

For some reasons, all the tailors I know never used their skill while in school. I don’t know why! Probably they never needed money. I know dressmaking can get really demanding, so if you are good at it, you could offer to work in a standard workshop that’s within your vicinity. One thing is certain, tailors will always be relevant.

Bonus Tip: Catering

While in school, my younger sister started cooking for her friends over the weekend. Then she grew it into a brand. She made pots of soup or any special meal in large quantities for people who wanted to stock up on food for the week. She also sold per plate to people based on request. At the time she was studying something in agriculture and was somehow able to manage both, howbeit she had a partner. My sister with the idea lived in a school standard hostel but her partner had a house off campus. Somehow they were able to work together to make sales. This is key in business. Every business would have its challenges and its risk. You have to be willing to persevere.

Final Note

For a Nigerian student, there are countless possibilities to make money if only you’d be willing to embrace opportunities. I once saw a cheap Ad offering to make one-minute videos for small businesses. It was way too cheap and as expected the quality wasn’t great but this guy had found a way to make cheap Ads with his smart phone using mobile video making apps. I can’t blame him for embracing an opportunity.

I have deliberately excluded sales from this conversation for a reason. It’s way too rampant. Every student on my contact is posting cheap clothes from Ali Express and frankly, it’s exhausting. Plus I wonder if they really make money. I won’t advise you to go in that line. If you want to sell clothes you better have something better than a cheap gown from China. Too many “what I ordered versus what I got”.

I may sound tough but trust me, it’s all from a place of love. I want you to make money rather than noise.

Empowering Africa Through Philanthropic Initiatives

“It is with the blessings of the Almighty, my family, colleagues, the support of my community and the backing of my conscience, that I announce the launch of the Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative, with an Africa Fund endowment of USD100million every year starting from this year, 2021; USD$50million to Nigeria and USD$50million to the rest of our beloved continent. Over the years as a corporate, and through the BUA Foundation, we have been actively involved in corporate philanthropy in various sectors – from health, education, community development, water & sanitation, sports, and even more recently, our work on COVID-19.”

Those words marked the beginning of yet another initiative aimed at improving the African continent.

A similar gesture was launched by yet another Nigerian Billionaire in the person of Tony Elumelu, in 2015, with an annual grant of $100 million to help 10,000 entrepreneurs over 10 years.

Though, with a focus on social development, the fund (ASR AFRICA) is made up of $50m to Nigeria, and the rest $50m to the rest of the continent.

The funds are specifically geared towards improving education, health and other social development needs across the continent.

“Our broad focus is equipping facilities, our researchers, healthcare practitioners and community-level service providers, with the aim of providing sustainable solutions for generations to come.”

The ASR Africa Initiative also announced grants of N1billion each to six Nigerian universities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

These grants would go toward the initiation and upgrading of infrastructure, where applicable in the benefitting universities, namely the Ahmadu Bello University, the University of Maiduguri, the University of Nigeria, the University of Benin, the University of Ilorin and the University of Ibadan.

These grants, according to Rabiu, would be directed to projects that will be delivered by the ASR Africa Initiative for the project duration.

He further noted that “as the world tries to claw its way back to business as usual, the Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative’s Africa Fund for Social Development & Renewal aims to be a modest reminder to us all that until our health, education and other development issues are fixed, business as usual in these times, means business as brutal. We pledge to continue to do what we can to support ongoing efforts by various governments to bridge the development divide across Africa.”

With these initiatives triggered by Nigerians, no doubt, the African continent is on its way to being the true bride of the world.

How to Close Impossible Deals: Competence vs Empathy

Before people decide on what they think of your message, they decide what they think of you.

A customer’s impression of your brand is critical; that’s why the customers are always right. Competence can attracts, but it takes empathy to consistently close impossible deal.

When faced with a sales decision: my first question is hardly about product quality but about trust. Can I trust you?

We were entertaining a friend for a few days, and one evening we took a stroll down my street, and my friend wanted to buy something from a particular shop. My response was, “oh, we don’t buy from them.” Did they have the products we wanted? Yes. But for some reasons, I’d rather walk an extra mile than shop from that store. Let’s be honest; every family has opinions on what store to buy from and why. I don’t hate the lady as a person, but I don’t deal with her because she lacks empathy.

Empathy and competence are top traits needed in sales, but when it comes to closing impossible deals, empathy trumps competence.

The Five Components of Trust

There are five major components of Trust, and you may fool some of the people some of the time and get away with lucky sales, but if you lack customers’ trust, you’ll struggle with closing deals.

  • Integrity
  • Competence
  • Consistency
  • Loyalty
  • Openness

You can rehearse for competence, but you can’t fake the qualities of empathy. Humans sense when salespeople fake these things. They may not act on it, but most of the time, it hits like a primal instinct.

Leading with Empathy

How does my small “beef” with a small store affect her sales on the street filled with hundreds of families? Well, in my three years on this street, that small shop became smaller and had far less patronage because . . . as customers, we decide what we think of her first before deciding on patronising her business.

Now let’s move on from small streets to a larger market with big brands like Nike. In 2016, Colin Kaepernick sat during the US national anthem to protest against police brutality and racial injustice. The following week, he kneeled during the anthem, and things escalated from there. Trump got involved; he demanded the NFL fire players involved in such a protest. It was intense. In September 2018, when Nike celebrated its 30th anniversary of the Just Do It slogan, they decided to pick their ambassador from the social arena. So they turned down a list of star athletes and opted for an outed NFL Quarterback who took a kneel during the national anthem.

Why?

Was there a backlash from the public?

Yes, there was. People burned their Nike products.

A Lesson on Empathy in Consumer Brand Marketing

Of course, the Kaepernick case was pretty intense and highly polarised, but as muggy as the situation seemed, Nike stood firmly on the side of the Demographic that benefited their sales. They took side with an athlete that embodied what they represented as a brand, and it was summarized in that one slogan: Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything. Just Do It.

As a salesperson, always remember that the fate of your product is decided within the social arena. The pole was a divided opinion between the baby boomers and the more progressive and spirited young ones. Nike was willing to sacrifice the baby boomers, and that decision paid off.

I could go on and on out of share love for Phil Knight and everything Nike embodies. Nike is top on the list of businesses that understand the power of Consumer brand marketing.

In Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping point, he made an important note on Mavericks. Mavericks are nonconformist. They are highly influential, and no, they are not social media influencers. These are regular folks who take their time to inquire about products and easily convince a family member and friend to try a product, and usually, they are good for their words. They are kids and mums, and they matter within the complex network of sales marketing.

First Impressions Might be all You Have

Mavericks are competent when it comes to consuming product data, and they can easily turn opinions of people toward or away from their products. The bottom line is you need Mavericks to close impossible deals on the broader market.

I watched a documentary on a failed Fyer Music festival that took many influencers to trend but was brought down by a teenage boy’s tweet.

The teenage boy passed one honest comment on the incompetence of the brand and it spiralled and brought a whole organisation to the ground.

Here’s why Empathy Trumps Competence, Especially in One-on-one sales

You can hire an expert to write catchy sales copy. You could design the most flashy logos but when a customer walks into your store none of that would matter if customer service is zero to none.

I took a customer success management course (don’t ask why. I was in a dark place with employment).  It started with a desire to boost my CV so this writer with zero experience in Customer Service could get a job in that field. It never worked out. Thankfully. I learnt the importance of retaining customers through marketing. I also got to learn that the sales funnel is an intricate network of built on referral from loyal customers. That means a deal doesn’t close after purchase.

Also, I’ve come to observe that some deals close before they even begin.

The first time I went shopping for a wedding dress, I had a list of stores recommended to me and my experience in the first store was just impressive. They didn’t have the dress I liked in the size that suits me, but while I was walking out, I told my sister that that was the store I was shopping from. Why? Empathy.

The next store I entered was far bigger but their service was so poor I couldn’t wait to run out.

I’ve recommended every Tom dick and Harry to that first store. Months after my visit, I still champion for them because I was in love with their culture. The odd thing is my wedding theme didn’t require a gown anymore yet the sales was succesful because I’ve directed several brides to them, and every one of them loved the store.

Let’s talk about competence

I once knew a competent dressmaker. I was impressed by her work. It was neat, and from my first dress, the fitting was just perfect but then something happened and it opened my eyes to her greed. That was the last time I’d do business with her and I can never recommend anyone to her.

Was she competent? Highly! But she lost out on a business deal with me because she put competence before empathy.

Final Words

Competence and empathy are great qualities in sales; but it’s the order that matters. The best leaders and salespersons put empathy before competence. This is a fact and has been widely researched by the Harvard Business Review. If you want to close impossible deals, try leading with empathy.

MORE: How to Implement Empathy in Your Marketing Strategy for Better Result

How to Implement Empathy in Your Marketing Strategy for Better Results

The place of empathy in marketing is not talked about enough. This is probably because the entire human race is becoming less empathetic. We only see the reflection of that in marketing.

In its most basic form, empathy is the ability to “put yourself in other’s shoes”. In other words, it’s the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.

From a marketing point of view, empathy is the ability to understand and share your customers’ feelings.

Maybe your marketing has not been working because you refuse to make room for empathy in your campaigns. Let’s attempt to fix that as we explore the place of empathy in marketing and how you can use it to get better results.

Examples of brands that have successfully done this

Spar Nigeria: Post-EndSars Protest

The EndSars protest had been infiltrated by hoodlums leading to looting and violence in some parts of Lagos. The hoodlums targetted businesses for looting, one of them being the supermarket chain, Spar.

One of their stores was attacked and goods carted away, leaving properties damaged. However, Spar’s reaction to the incident on Twitter is the epitome of empathy. And you can tell from the replies under the tweet.

Hotels.com: Captain Obvious, Social Distancing

We all know how the travel and hospitality industry was among the worst hit by the coronavirus outbreak. Most countries banned travels, so the industry was almost non-existent at the climax of the pandemic.

For most businesses, it was time to think of ways to manage the limited resources they have and see if there are other ways to make money still. But Hotels.com approached this differently.

Instead, they did a campaign to encourage people to stay at home. They literally did a campaign to discourage people from patronising them. That’s not something you see all the time, but then that’s how empathetic brands think.

At the time of doing this, the company’s revenue will feel the adverse effect. However, in the long run, people will remember them as the brand that places their customers’ health and safety above money.

Nike: Inspirational and motivational video

Empathy is about connecting with your customers on an emotional level. Nike is one of those brands that consistently demonstrate this.

In 2017, Nike released a 1hour documentary on a man who attempted breaking the two-hour marathon barrier.

This is not a profit-driven campaign but one that seeks to motivate and inspire its customers.

Twitter: Work from home for staff

The coronavirus pandemic made some companies adjust their business processes in varieties of ways. For Tech giant Twitter, it was an opportunity to show empathy to their employees by announcing a permanent work from home. Oh, yeah, employees deserve empathy, too and empathy towards employees also influence how customers see the brand.

How to Implement Empathy in your Marketing

Help, don’t sell

Most marketers always think of one thing – sales.

Well, we get it. It’s totally fine that you want the best ROAS (return on ad spend) on all your campaign, and that can make you focus on sales only.

However, if you want a good result from marketing, you have to focus more on helping rather than selling. You now have to approach marketing with the understanding that your customers need help and that you have just the solution they desire.

Consistently deliver contents that seek to help your customers, not the regular “come and buy”. This is why content marketing is always going to be crucial.

Connect with their feelings

As humans, emotions influence most of our decisions, including buying.

Findings have shown that humans feel first before thinking. So, the fastest way to get us to do anything is through emotions.

In a 2016 study, Tempkin Group discovered that when people have a positive emotional connection with a brand, they are 8.4 times more likely to trust the company, 7.1 times more likely to buy more and 6.6 times more likely to forgive such a company’s mistake.

When you create empathetic stories, you’re building a kind of emotional bond between you and whoever reads it. Similarly, when you develop narratives around situations and challenges, the customers tend to see themselves in your story.

And to successfully do this, you must know your customers through and through. Who they are, what they do, their interests etc. The buyer persona is going to play an important role.

Think like your customers do when they need to solve a problem

This is like the whole essence of empathy. That is, your ability to put yourself in your customer’s shoes.

Take a moment to imagine yourself as your customer facing a problem that your business seeks to solve. What steps did you take in finding a solution? Where did you go? What platforms did you use?

This will help you understand your customers, but it will also help you understand their buyer’s journey. And with this new knowledge, you can strategically position your brand at different stages of the journey.

Focus on making someone’s life better

Every product serves a need, solves a problem or helps somebody. Hence, benefits over features.

For instance, nobody cares about how your smartphone has 4GB ram, 48mp camera and 128GB space. Instead, tell them about how all of these features will benefit them. Tell them their phones will work faster (with 4GB ram), they can take more quality pictures of their products to share on social media (with 48mp camera). They have more space for all the files and documents that matter to them (with 128GB ram).

Make your customers see themself as unstoppable when they use your product. Seek to position your product as a lifesaver.

Deliver clarity, not confusion

Almost everyone has seen a confusing ad. But let’s not mention names; we are not here to ruin any brand’s reputation (further).

Sometimes you as a product owner, you know exactly what your product does. Still, the product may be so complex that it becomes difficult for your customers to get it.

Take a moment to imagine what Apple had to go through to market iPods when it was first released in 2001. Yes, it’s a groundbreaking innovative product, but how do you explain to people at the time that some tiny piece of technology can hold thousands of songs? People were only familiar with walkman then.

This was what Apple did. Here, take a look at what the first iPod commercial looked like.

The ad is so straightforward and easy to understand. Noticed how Apple used the known to introduce the unknown?

Apparently, there were laptops then, and people knew they could play music from their laptops. So, the ad guy started playing the music on his laptop but moved to his iPod when he needed to go out.

Another thing the ad portrayed is the portability of the iPod. The guy could dance and move with the iPod sitting pretty in his chest pocket. That was not something you could do with Walkman (as the name suggests, you could only walk with it)

Also, not a single word was said till the end of the ad. No words, yet we all got the message. Sometimes, less is more.

The “iPod, a thousand songs in your pocket” at the end of the ad summarised the point above – benefit over features.

And finally, the emotion-laced Apple slogan, Think Different, coming at the end of the ad is the icing on the cake.

This Apple ad may just be a classic example of a simple, clear and effective advertisement.

Listen to customers and evolve

See, this is probably the most important aspect of empathy. To empathise with people, you have to know them and to know them; you have to listen to them. That’s the way it should be.

There is so much you can learn from your customers. After all, your business exists for them.

So, take the time to hear what they have to say from time to time.

The happy, satisfied customers and the dissatisfied, unhappy ones – listen to everyone.

In Conclusion

Empathy boils down to the golden rule – treat others how you want to be treated. Treat your customers like they are humans with needs feelings, and they would respond with trust and loyalty.

5 Top Skills to Include on Your Resume to Increase Employability

143

Employers make money by solving problems for their clients. It, therefore, means that to get the attention of your target employer and land that dream job, you must include in your resume, certain skills relevant to your target industry’s problem-solving processes.

Employability is related to work and the ability to be employed, such as:

* The ability to gain initial employment
* The ability to maintain employment and make ‘transitions’ between jobs and roles within the same organization to meet new job requirements

* The ability to obtain new employment if required, i.e. to be independent in the labour market by being willing and able to manage their own employment transitions between and within organisations.

Wikipedia

It is my belief that you are reading this article probably because you are in search of that little extra spice to make your resume stand out from the rest; something to make it very irresistible to your target employers. Well, you are not alone, in fact, every job seeker dreams of having that particular resume that makes their employers’ anxious to call them for a one on one interview.

If you are in this category, you should know that employers place significant attention on finding candidates with the right competencies and skills for their organisation.

In this article, I’ll be exploring:

  1. What are employability skills, and why they’re essential?
  2. Top 5 skills that can get you employed easily.
  3. How to improve them.

There are top 5 skills that will get you employed easily into any career sector of your choosing once you have them written on your cv or resume.

They Are:

  1. Communication
  2. Teamwork and collaboration
  3. Critical thinking and problem solving
  4. Technology
  5. Leadership

What can you offer to make employers queue up for you? I bet you’re literally counting your fingers, blinking hard and probably ransacking your brain, but that’s fine.

What Are Employability Skills?

There are specific skills required for individuals to be employable. “a collection of achievements that sets people apart for a job” is referred to as employability. This means that there are specific skills, knowledge and attributes which you must have to gain employment in your desired career path.

With the current unemployment rate and significant traffic of graduates today from universities, there is a heightened focus to determine who is more qualified for the job. These skills are not necessarily dependent on how excellent your university cumulative grade point score is. Despite your university degree’s usefulness, your employers are also searching for other attributes, skills you possess that make you unique from others.

Why are Employability Skills Important?

Employability skills will inform them about how well you get along with other employees, teammates and customers and how likely you raise your job performance score.

1. Communication

This is an essential skill required to succeed in the job environment. communication is your ability to share information in a way everyone understands. It involves a clear interpretation of information shared without any form of misunderstanding. Unlike how abstract poetry and paintings are open to all variations, communication seeks to leverage clarity without any form of ambiguity.

Communication skills are required during the conversation with teammates, clients, shareholders and even your digital audience. Your words, either spoken or written, should appeal and connect to your clients at an emotional level to bring excellent results to your organisation. Communication skills also reach towards your ability to communicate non-verbally, such as the use of body language.

How Can You Improve Your Communication Skills?

Overcommunication can be very overwhelming because, in the long run, you’ll lose your listeners along the way. Keep your messages short, clear and straightforward to avoid overcommunication.

Divert the attention from yourself and place it on your audience. Become a better listener by engaging your audience more and giving them your maximum attention.

Organise your thoughts before you write; this will give your written document direction. Which will help the ideas to flow into each other and ensure that the message has been passed.

Writing often trains you on how to research and use information well. It helps you to build a writing culture that grows over time to yield results. A practical approach to doing this is by journaling, using social media and blogging.

2. Teamwork and Collaboration

Your ability to work with others in carrying out organisational assignments in the work environment is vital for your success. As a potential employee, you must work with others either in a group or team. Although some organisations require that you work remotely from home, it does not mean you should always be the hero who takes on all the work and completes it solo. You should be able to collaborate with others to carry out tasks. For example, you might need to collaborate with other departments in the organisation to plan an event or, better yet, complete an assignment. So your ability to stay coordinated and flow well with others while completing these tasks is known as teamwork and is a vital skill in many organisations.

How Can You Improve Your Teamwork and Collaboration?

Effective communication is critical. Just as established earlier, communication is integral in every business setting, departments and offices. You need to know how to communicate well with all your teammates and colleagues. If possible, create a personal relationship with everyone and learn how to relate to everyone in a friendly manner.

Setting ground rules may sound a bit too much, but it is necessary if you want to achieve your goals. People are of different orientation and mindset; it’s difficult to convince everyone to bring maximum input until there are ground rules with understood consequences.

3. Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

How quickly do you want to land that dream job? One of the best things you can do for yourself at this time is to hone your critical thinking skills. No one will hire a liability that is excellent at scratching their heads in the face of business-threatening situations. Employers are constantly looking for recruits whose brains are functional—people who can take the initiative to think of solutions quickly for the never-ending problems organisation.

How Can You Improve Your Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills?

Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities come from continuous learning. Your brain is constantly being developed by the experiences you have learned and applied, the number of books you’ve read or how great you are at research. To think critically and provide accurate solutions to problems, you should be able to learn continuously.

4. Technology

Like it or not, digital technology is topping the charts in the business world. Irrespective of your business role, you need to be conversant with the trending media technologies. Because new and better social apps are developed daily. You need to gain mastery over these technologies to give your application an edge over others. The world is changing, and soon, people will use virtual offices instead. To be able to function correctly, you need to develop your technical skills.

5. Leadership

Leadership skills are a necessity in many organisations. Your recruiters need to know if they can trust you with organisational assignments and responsibilities and expect excellent results. Leadership skills require all the four skills listed above, bringing out the best output. You must be willing to take responsibility, lead your team, make enormous contributions during team meetings, and lead by example.

Final Thoughts

You should know that the most critical skill you need to excel is your ability to learn. Besides the top 5 skills that get you employed easily, more skills might get you selected. But this article focuses on the most essential skills you’ll need to apply for any role. Ensure that there should be more room to expand your knowledge and be conversant with trends.

And when you are finally employed, the biggest illusion is thinking that your “work” will talk for you in that company when no one knows what you are doing or have done. “Works” do not talk; only humans talk. Do great things, and let people talk for you because you have spoken with people. Until people, not “works”, can speak in your absence, recommending you for opportunities, that elevation may not come.

10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Writing Skills

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Everyone needs to improve their writing skills. You know why? Because everyone is always going to write.

From job applications to leave applications, gig pitches and update communication, plus there are now social media accounts that constantly require you to write. So you see, you can’t run away from writing now, can you?

Now that it’s clear that we all need to improve our writing, here are 10 easy ways to do just that:

1. Write every day

Do you know what writing and weight loss have in common? To get the desired results in both scenarios, you need to exercise consistently.

You don’t become a better writer by wishing it; it’s not one of those things you pray for. Instead, you go for it. And there is no better way to go for improving your writing skills than doing the writing.

You need to practice writing to become a better writer constantly; there are no two ways about it.

There are some ways to do this. You can have a blog for yourself where you share contents on topics that interest you.

And if blogging is not an easy place to start, use your social media accounts for microblogging. Endeavour to post contents daily about a variety of topics, from personal interests to trending stories.

Gradually, you will notice that the more you do this, the more comfortable you’d become with writing. And the fact that you are becoming more comfortable at it means you are becoming a better writer.

Confidence matters in writing, you know. Because it’s when you’re confident that you’d know when to ditch some of the grammar rules you learnt in school (more on this shortly).

2. Create an outline before you write

Did you really think I just started writing this post without first having an online? I think not.

An outline is like the skeleton for your work, and you all have to do afterwards is flesh it up.

It makes life easier for you as a writer and helps you flow better. Even your reader will enjoy reading your work as the structure will be visible to the blind.

Depending on what you are writing on, an outline can be just a list of subtopics or a bit more detailed. In the latter, you may have to include notes on what you intend to cover under the subtopics and your main points.

If you are new to outline writing, you can begin with just listing the subtopics and then flesh it up with your content.

Example of an outline

  • Introduction

A quick overview of the topic

  • What is a Digital Product

Definition of the key term. Try to explain what a digital product is and is not.

  • Why Create a Digital Product

Provide reasons why it’s better to create a digital product over other product types.

  • Profitable Digital Product Ideas

3. Make sure you understand the concept you’re writing on

“You can’t give what you don’t have” should sound familiar. But Albert Estein even said it better –  “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it yourself.”

Before you start writing, try to see if you can explain the idea to that imaginary six-year-old in your head. If there is a goal you want to achieve with a writing, make sure you understand what that goal is from the start and can easily explain it to anyone.

For instance, this article aims to arm you with tips and ideas to help improve your writing skill. I knew it from the start, and it’s been my number one compass throughout the writing process.

And to do this, you will have to do some thorough research on the topic.

4. Read it out loud

This was one of the earliest lessons I learnt about writing. Today, my writing is not done until I’ve read it out loud to myself. This is something you should also be doing because it does improve your writing.

When you read out your work, you can easily tell if it flows smoothly. If it doesn’t, then it means you still have some fixing to do.

For instance, if you found some parts that took your breath away while reading out loud, then it’s clear you may have cases of long or difficult to read sentences. So, go make those sentences short.

5. Don’t be too conscious of grammar

Our English teachers meant well when they taught us those different grammar rules in school. But today, if you want to write easy-to-read contents, you may have to do away with some of those rules.

For instance, you are allowed to start a sentence with And and But (see, I did it in the last sentence, and nothing happened). This is because people use them like that when speaking and one of the most popular writing tips is to write the way you speak.

6. Read!

I can’t even start talking about how important this is. If you must improve your writing, then you must read – widely.

Read everything you can lay your hands on. Read the billboards, newspapers, magazines, blog posts, books… read everything.

The more you read, the easier it would be for you to develop an eye for what makes an effective piece and the mistakes to avoid.

Some of the best writers you know are also keen readers, and reading regularly is a quick way to develop your writing skills.

When you read, pay close attention to the choice of words, sentence structure, and how well the content flows. You will need all the information when you’re creating your content.

7. Let’s see your personality in your writing

This is one of the factors that stand distinguish writers. Sometimes, without seeing the writer’s name, you can tell a Neil Patel’s content from Seth Godin’s. The two have different personalities, and it shows in their writing.

There is no better way to develop your writing style than this. Use the slangs and phrases you use in your everyday conversation in your writing (don’t over-do it, though).

When applicable, drop some relevant personal stories to buttress points. It makes your writing more original and trustworthy.

8. Invest in writing tools

Grammarly comes to mind first here. Shoutout to Alex Shevchenko and Max Lytvyn for coming through with this important writing tool that has saved every writer.

Grammarly is free to an extent, but if you want to get the best out of the tool, you should check out the premium version.

One of the benefits of tools like this is they help keep your piece free of errors and make some other cool recommendations that would make your writings easy to read.

Hemingway editor is another fantastic (not-so-popular) writing you should try out too.

9. Imitate writers you admire

By the way, plagiarism and imitation and two completely different things. I hope we are clear on that? Good.

The same way you most likely have some blogs you enjoy reading, so should you have writers whose contents you enjoy. Now, identify what you like about these writers and see if you can implement them in your writing too.

Do they have lots of humour in their work and that’s something you like? Then, maybe you should try it too.

Do they use lots of analogies to make their work relatable? Try that too.

They use pop culture references to keep readers engaged? Go ahead and do likewise.

Over time, you’d see yourself mastering these different writing skills, and before you know it, you’d have come up with your unique style.

10. Always keep it simple

There is often that temptation to impress. Often, people confuse ambiguity with smartness.

You may think you sound smarter if you use complex words, but that’s not always true.

There’s no point in writing a blog post like it’s some undergraduate or post-graduate thesis. Your readers are everyday people, not some university professors.

So, what you should do is ditch those big words and go for simple terms that effectively communicate your intention instead.

In Conclusion

It’s not that hard, is it? You just need to set your mind to it.

While everyone can use the tips, they are handy to those whose jobs require them to always write (content writers, content marketers, marketers, influencers, social media managers, communication executives, among others).
