Salary: How To Pay Yourself

As a business owner, depending on the structure of your company, there are basically two ways to effectively pay yourself-

  1. Salary – The typical salary payment method
  2. Owner’s draw – Where the owner takes a percentage from the company’s profit

I believe that entrepreneurs hardly make more money for themselves than what they would have been paid in salary if they worked for someone else. I’ve had to, therefore, ponder on whether the path of entrepreneurship is worth the accompanying stress on the individual, and if it wouldn’t be better to seek a more secure job and earn a salary as a 9-5 player.

Ironically, anyone who hasn’t been into entrepreneurship may romanticize the idea of being one, especially due to the often seemingly glamourous lifestyle of most CEOs which often paint the picture of large take-home salaries and benefits.

What may not be apparent to many on the other side of the divide, however, is the work; sacrifice and other below the belt punches that entrepreneurs often receive to keep their businesses running.

If my belief is right, it, therefore, means that entrepreneurs must be motivated by other factors other than salaries.

Suggested: The 5 Motivations That Drive People to Choose Entrepreneurship

But talking about salaries, I am often bewildered by how an entrepreneur’s worth should be determined, in terms of salary. For all the harrowing ordeals that entrepreneurs put themselves through, there must at least be a method for calculating the adequate compensation that an entrepreneur should pay himself as salary.

Unlike the corporate world, where you have the opportunity to discuss your salaries and other compensation packages with potential employers before you accept to be hired, setting your salary as a business owner is more complicated.

Whatever the figure you choose to pay yourself as an entrepreneur, one thing is sure – your number must put into consideration the importance of maintaining a healthy cash flow to keep your company in business. You must also ensure that you pay yourself only from your profit while being fair to your employees and investors if you have any.

Advantages of Paying Yourself as a Business Owner

  • It Helps To Keep The Business Running When The Owners Are Paid
  • It Helps Improve Investor Confidence on The Business
  • It Helps With Tax and Accountability

Here are a few things to consider when setting your salary:

  1. Determine How Much Your Business is Worth
  2. Determine What Your Position is Worth
  3. Consider The Legal Structure of Your Business

FAQ on Paying Salaries

How Can a Business Owner Pay Salaries With a Negative Cashflow?

Regardless of what is happening with your financial figures, employees want to get paid. Maintaining a healthy cash flow isn’t always an easy task for most business owners and entrepreneurs. As a business consultant, I’ve helped my clients beat this pressing need for positive cashflow by introducing them to stop-gap measures like establishing a Business Line of Credit and at times help in securing short term loans.

Cash is gasoline for your business – it’s the lubricant that keeps all the parts working.
Without it, any business is dead in the water. But far too often, businesses focus on profitability versus cash flow. This can be quite problematic, so it’s essential to have a firm grasp of your business’s cash flow.

Should A Business Owner Take Salary With a Negative Cash flow?

No, it is obvious that once you take salaries as a business owner during a negative cashflow period, you would not only hurt your cash the more, you would also hurt the morale of your employees.

Winners and Losers of 2020: How to Financially Scale 2021

People were making money in 2020 and even scaled financially and I didn’t know!

Did you?

I thought everyone was staying indoors?

So how come these businesses experienced a boom? I feel cheated.

More importantly, what are these businesses and how can I get on that train?

These bills aren’t paying themselves, hello!

Reviewing 2020

In 2020 we had a lot of expectations and plans on how we might grow stronger financially.

Then least to our expectations, we were given a big surprise package – The Lockdown started.

Yeah, it was the global pandemic and we stayed in doors to minimize the spread.

Yeah, I’m not going back there.

But while indoor, there were A LOT of expenses and yet, no money was coming back into our wallet.

Did I hear there’s a mutant virus? Give me a break.

Many were more depressed than ever before;

I know I was.

Many became broke; while some utilized the moment and saw lots of opportunities to make money.

What really matters to anyone that wants to scale through financially is your ability to see opportunities and utilize it.

Still going back to the situation, roughly 45% of individuals on a global scale were affected badly, reasons being.

  1. Some governments couldn’t cater well enough for its citizens. They did not have the database or capacity to disburse funds to each individual’s accounts directly. So passing downline the chain from one office to another, the allocated funds to suppose its citizens kept decreasing.
  2. Most citizens feed from hand to mouth. Job wages and means of livelihood was relatively low to an adequate standard of living. People went from a hundred thousand salaries to twenty thousand stipends. Hard.

Basically if this next wave of Lock-down hits again, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

So how can we get prepared for the future and not get affected in any way?

Preparing for 2021

We all have been forced to go virtual with School, and work, having zoom meetings and other activities.

While all of this was happening some people made a lot of money.

Because they knew where the demand was coming in from and they saw the opportunity many others didn’t see.

Here is a brief on opportunities many people missed but can help you scale financially in 2021.

You can start off with virtually any of these options and maintain relevance in any instance of another lock-down.

So in no particular order, the Winners in 2020 are:

Recharge and Get Paid

As the name implies you get paid for recharging your line and other utilities bills.

Recharge and get paid is widely known all throughout Most African countries especially in Nigeria.

Many people were concerned about not having daily money inflow and yet subscribed for internet.

Analytically speaking the demand for data was at its peak from the month of April up until September. ISPs were forced to increase its bandwidth by almost 86%, in some countries to 120%.

The demand for data was alarming. Some people scaled financially from sitting in their homes like you were during the lockdown with Recharge and get paid platform.

Oh mama. I could have done that!

Recharge and get paid created a means for anyone in Nigeria to buy airtime VTU, pay cable subscription, buy internet data, and pay electricity bill and other daily services that you pay for every day.

You earn by selling Data and other bundles to individuals and to yourself. It was a really great place to start and still a good place to start with situations like what happened globally.

Again with its affiliation marketing, you can earn more as it also has packages that you upgrade to increase your earning.

Building up a strong network of friends and family would be a breaking point for you and a strong advantage to anyone venturing into this business. It also requires you starting with a capital.

Want to learn how, SEE: Recharge and Get Paid: How it Works

Timebucks

Another opportunity that can still be utilized is Marketing surveys. Which brings us to this platform that pays you for making a survey.

What is Timebucks?

Timebucks is an online market survey platform, you get paid for performing tasks – Watching videos, uploading contents on your social media page, taking surveys, voting, playing games and more.

Goodness. This was perfect for a lock-down. It matched my pajamas. Tears.

I mean I do these things on a regular daily basis.

And many individuals made money from this platform during the lockdown since they all needed to while away time and be happy.

Here is the amazing part, TikTok users with high numbers of followers get paid as well.

I thought we TikTok-ed purely for the cruise. Shocker!

Now, Timebucks is an Australian based company owned by Australian Clearing Pty Ltd.

You also earn a commission when you send out your links to friends that are shopping on Aliexpress or Alibaba.

Timebucks is no exception when it comes to affiliate marketing, you earn from each friend you invite to use Timebucks.

The good side of timebucks is they pay in cash worldwide as it makes use of popular payment gateway merchants like skrill, Payeer, Neteller and also in bitcoin.

It doesn’t resist your earning to gift cards like other survey platforms.

Timebucks pays weekly with a minimum of $10.

With the survey earning, if you work hard you’d be sure of earning up to $4-$8 per day. That’s one cool way to scale up financially.

Investing in Indices, Commodities and Bonds

Now this might sound absorbed, and you might be asking yourself right now, do you mean Forex? Yes absolutely. Many people have heard or experienced some downturns while trading. But my question to you is how do you trade?

Do you trade to see the opportunities with the market news and sentiments? Or you choke up yourself with so many fundamental analysis(Indicators and patterns).

From my experience so far while trading with professional traders, I came to realize trading works like a psychological game between the Big Banks and every other person outside the Big Banks.

Come to think of it, if everyone wins, who would lose? There had to be losers whose loss goes to the winners.

The Big Banks go against everyone, so suppose everyone knows there would be a price increase in cable pair(USD), they would intentionally wait for that price increase and sell instead, breaking almost 70% of traders stop loss. (Remember the ones with the higher liquidity controls the market).

So How Does This Affect the Pandemic and Help you Scale Financially?

Did you notice no one bought fuel to run their vehicle during the pandemic? Everyone was indoors! Certainly.

Companies and factories that run on diesel were all on hold. The demand and the supply for Oil ridiculously crashed as Oil price fell to $0.10 (10cent) per barrel.

This was the greatest opportunity a lot of people missed.

But I wouldn’t blame them because the situation of the pandemic wasn’t looking promising like it would be ending soon.

Imagine buying $100 worth of oil at 10 cents per barrel, that gives you Ten thousand (10,000) barrels of oil. Coming forward to December, oil now costs $50 per barrel, that gives you $500,000 in the space of 8 months.

You should actually be looking into the forex market for visible opportunities, take in and leave, not spending all your day calculating patterns and indicators, because the blunt truth is, you have 60% chances of losing all your money.

Also some people invested in other stocks like Zoom, Investors got almost 250% – 300% ROI from Zoom platform just from the pandemic. OPPORTUNITIES ARE ALWAYS MOVING, BUT YOU HAVE TO SEE IT.

Enough of counting back on the woes, let’s look at the brighter future.

Acquiring a Tech Skill

With the way things are turning currently, with people now fully into the internet space than ever before, there is a high demand for various skills to become more relevant and gain more dexterity in what you aspire.

The good thing about tech is you can be self-trained. Even a novice in tech can easily find opportunities to scale financially while growing their skill.

I would really love you to take your heart off from what your childhood career aspirations were, frankly. In the near future from now, there would be fewer needs for Doctors, engineers (Petroleum, mechanical and chemical especially), teachers, a sales rep and so many more.

As the world is evolving and technology is really growing at an exponentially high speed, the labour force gradually decreases, as Artificial intelligence also takes more Jobs in the Labor market.

We can see this in some states in America and China where AI takes record of the sales of a store; Assembles a car initially assembled by 15 men; manufacturing textiles and materials.

Thinking Tech is one of the ways one can upscale 2021 and beyond. Now when you hear tech there are so many things to think about.

1. Cryptocurrency and Block-chain Development

Blockchain is a decentralized digital ledger that saves transactions on thousands of computers around the globe. The demand for blockchain developers is skyrocketing at a very high rate and it’s also an emerging technology meaning that everyone who ventures into this field at its early stage is more likely to upscale in the near future.

Last year was a good time to get into cryptocurrency. 2021 is a better time to scale up financially with block-chain.

The good thing about Tech skills is that in most cases you don’t need a degree to get a Job, with the right practice and portfolio you’ve built gives you more likelihood for being known to get a Job. Blockchain as we speak currently is really in high demand as we have more and more people worldwide using cryptocurrency as a means of payment. Remember the opportunities are where the demand is.

2. Data Science

I’m sure you’ve heard people talk about Data Science.

Well what is it?

Deals with mining, analysing and sorting out big and complex data. Data science is related to data mining, machine learning and big data. We have over 3.4 billion internet users worldwide, who do various activities according to their interest. It’s for the job of Data scientists to look for ways to analyze this data, and build a predictive model for what exact use they need the data for.

The demand for data scientists is also increasing at a very high rate, the only thing that holds back is most data science jobs require you to have a degree.

If you can spare the time and get the right training, you’ll could scale financially.

3. App Development

Developing skills around building an app would come in handy for any developer as the Job is usually by contract the pay is also very much okay. There are various programming languages for building an app, so before delving into this ensure you make proper research on languages that would suit your learning process. So far the top languages for building an app are Javascript, Kotlin and python. Using Python programming language is a huge advantage as python becomes the most popular and easy language to use in building almost anything programmable.

You get to meet clients and other programmers that might be interested in your work in their online community or Hub.

4. Graphics Designing

Graphics designing isn’t really high in demand but a great skill to pave way for you in any settings and help you scale financially.

5. Motion Graphics and Animation

Through the pandemic, a lot of companies need to make awareness with their brand on taking safety measures. The only way they could do that since there was no social gathering was to pay for motion graphics and animators to make video clips on that. It opened a new breaking point for people in this field as more and more people see the need of churning out concepts both minimal and precisive. Looking into animation and motion graphics is a good start as animation keeps developing into new concepts and ideas.

6. Videography (Media)

One very interesting thing that amazes me anytime I sit back and think about it is the entertainment and media industry.

Except the world goes on extinction this skills would never fade away as long as there is a television and mobile screen.

Companies and individuals get to make new concepts and commercials for their brands and products, acquiring this skill in this modern world gives you all the edge that you would be needing to scale financially.

My advice is for you to not bother about any heavy gears, make do with what you already have, because if you keep waiting to get those expensive gears you just might not deliver an efficient and well todo Job.

Next thing you should be looking out for in coming years is

Energy

Yeah energy!. Clean energy!.

Clean energy can be said to be derived from renewable,  zero-emissions sources, as well as energy saved through energy efficiency measures.

Renewable energies are obtained from natural processes, common renewable energies are solar, wind, hydropower and biomass.

MEET the First Nigerian Solar Franchisor

We have big companies and organizations like Tesla coming up with astounding ways to make good use of renewable energies. Australia is currently budgeting $1.2billion dollars to support research and investment in clean energy, energy storage and other sectors relating to energies.

Researching and investing in energy in the coming years is ideal for startups. Building a sustainable model and products for improving the energy sector. Thinking of energy in an entrepreneur way it would be best to look into importing solar panels from China in little scales. There are so many opportunities that come out from going into energy. It’s way too expensive for an individual to startup on energy or thinking of building an energy plant. There are other ways that someone can invest in energy. That is either through ETFs(exchange-traded funds) or bonds.

Investing in Equity

Stocks and Mutual funds are both called equity, meaning that they have shares in a company that can be issued and traded through exchanges or over the counter market. Investing in stocks is an excellent way to grow wealth.

One of the best and simple ways for totally anyone to start investing in the stock market is to open an online investment market that can be used to buy shares of stocks and stock mutual funds.

  • TD Ameritrade – The company’s Trade Architect platform is also straightforward to use, making it a popular option for first-time investors who want to get their feet wet.

It has no account minimum making it really easy and convenient for people getting acquainted with the stock market.

  • E-trade – When it comes to continuous learning and market updates, E-trade by far surpasses other platforms with markets as it educates its investors on every market change.

Charles Schwab – This company itself was ranked by J.D. Power from 2016-18 for Three Years in a row now as the “Highest in Investor Satisfaction with Full-Service Brokerage Firms”. For the 2020 survey, Schwab ranked top among do-it-yourself investors.

They also have a good customer service policy that enables customers to get refunds on related commissions, a transaction fee, or an advisory program if they don’t feel satisfied.

Great! So taking what you have viewed through the suggested recommended brokers to start with. Next, let’s consider if you are actually a very busy person who probably wouldn’t have time to undergo any financial training or be limited in some ways. I have got the right solution for you, so long as you’re interested in being part of the winners of 2021.

I bring to you Robo-Advisers. Robo-advisors or Robo-advisers are a class of financial advisers that provide financial advice or investment management online with moderate to minimal human intervention. They provide digital financial advice based on mathematical rules or algorithms. So anywhere you are concerning the Stock Market this would be an excellent buy, as it helps with basically everything you would need to have a successful trade.

Best advisors to start with:

  • SoFi – Starts with a minimum of $0
  • Betterment – A minimum of $0 and
  • Ellevest – A minimum of $0

Also note that both the Robo-Advisors and the broker allows you to open an account with little money. Robo-Advisors is more like a passive means of getting in returns. It may sound expensive, but the management fees here are generally a fraction of the cost of what a human investment manager would charge: Most robo-advisors charge around 0.25% of your account balance.

It’s quite easy to make your way around this whole market with the help also of some DIY reading.

I would like to give you a heads up on the long run. Be sure to always look closely at different situations, because it’s what you see that gives you return. But with the Robo-Advisor, you wouldn’t need to worry about any of these. Trade with your head not your emotions

Difference Between Stocks and Mutual Funds

When you invest in a stock, you are purchasing a share of one company. A mutual fund offers more diversification by bundling many company stocks into one investment. So basically what this means is that the stock market just lets you invest in just one market, but mutual funds enable you to invest in assets like the stock itself, the bonds, the money market instruments and other assets.

Venturing into Local forms of trades.

We have covered a lot, and I would be dropping off with this very last way of upscaling 2021.

As we all know, trading has been the oldest currency as it evolves in its nature generations after generations.

Truth is the world’s economy, and all it’s political forms of government all run because of trading. Imagine no one trades, then things crash. Now I’m referring solely to the local form of trade.

This hasn’t been easy on itself, but it takes a while to establish as it requires you starting with a large amount of capital to make sales. And also a form of publicity to create awareness for your product. While that is still valid with clearly no much of a rush about getting yourself all out while trading locally, I bring to you DropShipping, DropShipping makes you trade(buy goods without money and sell to get the money).

It might sound bizarre, but this works with the online market.

Here’s how it works –  Let’s say you visit amazon, and you see a product quite cheaper than it is on other platforms.

You take that product from amazon to the other platforms. When the customers want to make payments, they pay to you with their shipping address. You take those details to amazon to buy back that cheap product, inputting the customers billing address so that shipments go directly to the customers home.

This doesn’t only apply to dropshipping; it applies to anything that has to do with trade. Get components, gadgets and other items, take the item online to sell. I guarantee you; more people would call you in demand for that product, as long as it is viable. So always keep this behind you. The opportunities are always there, but you have to see it yourself.

Conclusion

I’ve shared several opportunities on how to scale financially in 2021. The key point is: opportunities are always moving. learn to recognize them as they come and take advantage of seasons.

Entrepreneurship – How To Start a Virtual Consulting Business

Have you ever considered being a virtual consultant? Do you like the idea of starting a virtual consulting business?

Okay, maybe you’re not sure what virtual consulting is. We will eventually get to that. But do you like the idea of working remotely and at your own pace? Would you rather be your own boss rather than answering to people? And most importantly, will you like to increase your earnings while doing less work?

Okay, enough of the questions. If you said yes to any of that, then you want to be a virtual consultant (you just may not realize it yet).

So, let’s see what it means to be a virtual consultant.

Who is a Virtual Consultant?

A virtual consultant is you when you decide to make money from selling your expertise via 1-on-1 consulting over the internet. Your job as a virtual consultant has nothing to do with location, time and money.

All you do is stay in the comfort of your home (or co-working space if you like) and respond to clients based on appointment and schedule. Better still, you can do your work when travelling or on vacation without feeling as much as you’re working.

What you consult in as a virtual consultant varies from person to person, depending on skills and experience. Hence, one of the first steps to starting a virtual consulting job is to ask – what am I good at? More details on that shortly.

You work as a language coach, graphic designer, software trainer, social media expert, personal trainer, language coach or nutrition experts virtual consultant. The list is inexhaustible.

Virtual consulting is a form of entrepreneurship, and you should run it like a business.

Benefits of Virtual Consulting Business

There are several benefits of working as a virtual consultant. However, the most prominent and exciting benefit is the fact that you are more efficient with your time.

This can be further broken down as follows:

  • You eliminate wasted time commuting

If you have to resume at an office every day, you know how much of your time that gets wasted. The “virtual” in this consulting means you can work from anywhere and don’t have to bother about traffic. Lagos residents in Nigeria will sure love this considering the traffic jam experienced on the road daily.

  • Clients get more value for their money, so they will keep coming back

As a virtual consultant, you are more efficient with your time having gotten rid of the time wasted on the road. Hence, clients ultimately get results and value from your service. They are happy and will make you happy too by coming back. Win-win for everyone.

  • You can do more and earn more

Working as a virtual consultant gives you the flexibility to take on as many jobs as you have time for. This may not be easy if you are somebody’s employee.

This flexibility that comes with this line of career can help you make more money, save more and generally improve your life.

  • Work when you want, with whoever you want

This is a practical demonstration of having your own life in your hands. Working as an employee with an organization means you don’t get to choose your colleagues and clients. You work with whoever the company assigns with you.

In this case, however, you decide who to work with and when you want.

And location has nothing on you. You can be in Nigeria and have clients in Canada or Finland.

So, you want to start a Virtual Consulting business?

How to Start a Virtual Consulting Business

Navigating your way through this business may not be easy, especially for a starter. People will have to trust you first before deciding to work with you.

But not to worry, this guide will help you get started and find your feet as a virtual consultant. Without further ado, here is how to create a virtual consulting business

  • Explore and test an Idea

What problem can you solve for people? What can you effortlessly teach? These are the questions to get you started in your journey to becoming a consultant (virtual or not).

Begin by taking a close look at your current skills set and identify the one with this balance – you enjoy + there is a high demand for it.

You need to enjoy it so work can be fun. Imagine getting paid for doing what you enjoy doing. Cool right?

There should also be demand for it as that’s the only way you can remain in business.

The summary here is the same as with starting most businesses – seek to solve problems and make sure you have fun while at it.

After identifying the skill, next is to start getting opinions of individuals and businesses who may need your service to see if they won’t mind paying for it.

  • Put yourself out there

Yes, it’s remote work. But no one will come to look for you in your room.

Put yourself out there but begin with the people closest to you. Your friends and contacts should know what you do. It will be easier to get jobs from people that already know you than from total strangers.

And you build your portfolio from the jobs you get from friends and associates to get even more jobs from outsiders.

How you go about promoting yourself to the public may differ, depending on the services you offer and where you can find your target audience online.

For some, it can be on social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Others may have to resort to freelancing platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork. And the bigger consultants create their websites and run paid ads for visibility.

  • Offer high value with low risk

Offering high value means you would convince the potential client that your service will help solve their needs beyond expectation. But well, those are just words. They may still be reluctant to work with you.

That’s why you have the next move, which is giving them low risk. This is usually in the form of financial commitment. Some go as far as providing the complete service and only get paid when the client gets the desired result.

Another way to do this is to provide convincing guarantee and after-sales support. In other words, even after you have delivered a project, the client should still have free access to you in case any issue arises.

  • Deliver

Now you have the job; it’s time to provide the excellent service you promised.

Note that the way you deliver your service depends on the industry and the type of agreement you have with the client. What matters, however, is to deliver.

As you work with clients, there are some rules you should not forget

1. Keep communication going

Always furnish your clients with information on updates and all they need to know. They should never be in the dark or have to ask before getting the information they need.

This also helps you to maintain the needed momentum so you can deliver the project on time.

2. Make the client happy, whatever it takes

Nothing else should matter to you than having happy clients. They will not just keep coming back; they will also bring their friends along. That’s why you should be ready to go the extra mile just so your clients can be happy.

3. Make everybody’s life easy

Make your life and that of your clients easy while the job is ongoing. Take advantage of various tools that will make workflow and communication easy for both parties.

For booking phone calls, tools like Calendly can come in handy, instead of doing back and forth on mail.

Google Doc will help make provision of live updates possible.

And Zapier will be useful in the automation of processes.

These are just some of the tools that will make your life and that of your client easy while the job is ongoing. Please take advantage of them.

Conclusion

So, there you have the blueprint to starting a virtual consulting business.

As with most businesses, it’s only challenging when starting out. However, from the moment you get your first client, it starts getting easier.

Meet the First Nigerian Franchisor to start a Solar Electricity Franchise in South Africa

In South Africa, there’s been a spike in the solar electricity franchise, but there is a Nigerian franchisor, Tonye Irims who is working on making solar electricity cheaper and more available to South African residents.

Research by Bloomberg NEF revealed that “wind and solar energy are now the least expensive forms of power in two-thirds of the world”. The world is beginning to embrace solar energy as the next environmentally friendly way to generate energy for domestic and industrial use.

Tonye has always been passionate about affordable and quality electricity. It is the primary reason he left Nigeria 26 years ago. He is currently working on enhancing the prospect of solar electricity, and expanding his solar electricity franchise, WiSolar to other African countries.

In 2011, Tonye failed at an attempt to launch FriendsChip, a payment app in the United States of America, and he had to return to South Africa.

He started WiSolar in the South African winter of 2016 by putting together solar electricity in his house after many experiences of being cut off the electricity grid with hefty reconnection fees. In November of 2016, WiSolar started operations

Like many startups, WiSolar has faced and is still facing a few business challenges. Tonye and his team were thrown out of their first store in 2017 due to unpaid back rent. They were only able to do 3 installations in their first year of business and were kicked out of their office because they couldn’t afford to keep up with the rent.

The dark days continued to the extent that in the same 2017, Tonye wanted to sell the store branch for as low as R120,000 (USD 8,000) but couldn’t get any willing buyer.

Despite the many challenges Tonye faced in scaling WiSolar, he decided to give it another shot with R60,000 seed capital he got in 2018. Things didn’t take off until February 2019. WiSolar got its first paying client in February 2019, and ever since then, the company has been growing financially, and in manpower.

WiSolar is currently looking to add over 100 work-from-home jobs in 2021. It will help boost the labor market in South Africa after the adverse effect of Covid-19.

As a growing company, WiSolar is faced with a few challenges. Providing electricity at a cheaper rate isn’t cheap, and it will take adequate funding to keep the business going. Another problem is getting the right people on the team. The vision of creating 100 work-from-home jobs next year will see to it that the right people will be employed to fill the vacant positions.

WiSolar is on a mission to roll out prepaid electricity for variable loads for as low as R0.78c per Kwh. This is in line with their vision to provide affordable solar electricity to every household in South Africa and Nigeria.

WiSolar recently received two awards in the 2020 MEA Business Awards for Client Service Excellence, and The Most Innovative Clean Energy Company – Africa. The recognitions are pouring in, and in the nearest future, they’ll be competing with international companies in the solar electricity industry.

Tonye disclosed that he’s very keen on breaking into the Nigerian solar electricity market. The plan is to make solar electricity cheap and available for Nigerians for as low as N20 per Kwh, which is cheaper than what the average Nigerian spends on electricity per hour.

Preparing for the New Year: A Guide for Business Owners

Did you heave a sigh when you saw 2020 coming to an end?

I did.

With the new year lurking around though, it’s time to strengthen your commitment to acting on your business goals.

Considering how the year 2020 panned out for many businesses, with the unexpected global pandemic hitting the crust of major economies worldwide and in turn leaving scars on individual’s pockets; you may feel sceptical about making elaborate plans for 2021.

However, now may be the perfect time to rid yourself of the unnecessary wait and launch out or expand on that business idea. What better time to make such bold move than the start of a new year?

Reinvent; restructure; strategize.

As with delving into new waters, it would be tricky going in blind. I am quite certain that failure isn’t a preconceived notion as you seek to embark on this endeavour.

With this in mind, I have curated two mini lists, firstly about things to consider as you plan for the future, and secondly, the market evaluation and research you should do that would almost guarantee a smooth landing while you leap.

Never had a business plan? Then read this article on writing a business plan.

13 Things You Should Know While Planning for the New Business Year

Here are things you should know as you plan to either start or expand your business in 2021.

  • Create a plan:  Look at the next twelve months with the business peaks and valleys in mind. Create a strategy and a plan for how you will prepare for the slack times when revenues are good. Your design will help you stay focused in the heat of battle. So many startups commonly overlook this as they go in hoping for the best, they seem to forget that the market can be unpredictable, and the best way to predict it is to plan it.
  • Stick to the plan: If budgeting for future expenses is an essential first step, and creating a plan is the second, you will need to stick to the plan for it to be successful. I’m not convinced that means a rigid adherence to a program if situations change, but make sure you consider the program and the ramifications of deviating from it in those situations. Discipline is one of the most emphasized qualities in most wall street journals; if that is true for conglomerates, then it is much more so for startups.
  • Establish benchmarks and goals: Poor cash flow management is one of the biggest causes of small business failure, so establishing practices and strategies for properly managing your cash flow should be a priority. Make sure you’re on top of your cash flow metric and consult with an accountant if you’re not sure of the best approach to take.
  • Stay on top of your customers: Let’s say you bill your customers by invoice, and now you’ve offered them 30 days to pay their bill. A slow-paying customer will eat up all the profit you may have had—making your busy season less profitable and putting the slower times at risk. To speed things up, you might offer your customers an additional discount to pay today or have a credit card on file you can charge against at the end of the month. The goal is to avoid the inevitable cash flow challenges associated with slow-paying customers. The quicker you have access to that cash flow, the easier it is to manage. One thing I have learnt is how to make things affordable for customers without making your product cheaper. You need your money at hand, give them payment structures that wouldn’t hamper your cash flow.
  • Start saving: Setting aside a little cash for a rainy day doesn’t just apply to your household budget. There are a lot of unexpected business expenses that could be addressed with some money in the bank. A good goal to shoot for is three to six months of operating capital, but anything is better than nothing. Some of the smartest business owners I know regularly set aside some of their profits to ensure they have at least a three- to six-month cushion should something unexpected happen.

This outline are things to consider before starting a new business or expanding existing ones; now we’ll move to my second list: keeping your business afloat.

Tips on Staying Afloat

To keep your business thriving, it’s all about foundations, so the proper market evaluation is always a key factor. Here are some pointers:

  • Need/urgency — Is your product needed? How badly do people want or need this right now? These are the most important questions you would have to answer because your product should ideally be solving a problem. At the start of the pandemic, demand on certain household items increased while others dropped.

Vendors lost clients who had booked ahead for big events as there were now regulations on public gatherings. Jewellers couldn’t make sales because no one was dressing up for zoom weddings. Considering the world isn’t entirely out of the water, you may want to reaccess your market and align with new demands.

  • Pricing Potential — what is the highest average price a purchaser would be willing to spend for a solution?
  • Market Size — How many people are actively purchasing things like this?
  • Cost of Customer Acquisition — how easy is it to acquire a new customer? On average, how much will it cost to generate a sale, both in money and effort?
  • Cost of Value-Delivery — how much would it cost to create and deliver the value offered, both in money and effort?
  • The uniqueness of offer — how unique is your offer versus competing offerings in the market, what incentives are you offering or how are you doing it better that would make you preferred to your competitors
  • Speed to market — how quickly can you create something to sell?
  • Up-Front Investment — how much will you have to invest before you’re ready to sell?
  • Evergreen Potential — once the initial offer has been created, how much additional work will you have to put into it to continue selling?

These are a few pointers you need to consider as you venture into the new year.

Final Words

These are only tips I curated because I believe they would be very helpful, but the ultimate success or failure of your business is down to you.

It’s Not Business It’s Personal: The Ideal Work-Life Balance

138

Balancing work and life takes a physical toll on us. But it also affects us emotionally.

64% of consumers expect brands to be more human than business.

Simply put, business is personal; very personal.

Here’s a little back story.

I recently got contracted to work with a leader who had just lost a much-valued employee in his startup to a fierce competitor. He had invested a large amount of time in mentoring and training said person and had high hopes and expectations of what they could achieve together with the business. The employee was identified as a top talent within the company’s ranks, and what’s more, the resignation came as a complete surprise. Expectedly, the team leader felt let down as he recounted the events to me and in an attempt to downplay these feelings he resigned to this;

“I guess the conclusion I have come to,” he said, “is that I just mustn’t take this personally.”

Is It Business, or Is It Personal?

This is a sentiment we have all often heard in work contexts: “Don’t take it personally” or “Hey, it’s not personal; it’s business.”

I’ve heard it said about feedback, conflict, difficult conversations, restructuring, losing deals, collaboration, dealing with career ups and downs — all kinds of workplace and business issues. And yet I feel it’s an absurd idea. In an attempt to protect ourselves, we have gone on to breed lacklustre and ineffectiveness among existing and new startups.

In a 2018 article written by Lucy Brian of the six-vertical, she outlined the top five qualities of a successful entrepreneur which all happened to be “personal” qualities:

1. Resolute motivation and passion

2. Self-discipline

3. Risk-taking ability

4. Creative thinking

5. Persistence

If this is true of an entrepreneur, then it’s safe to say that taking things personally at work is the first step to maximizing capacity as an entrepreneur, leader or a team member.

Furthermore, work is the place where I’m going to spend the bulk of my waking hours — indeed, the majority of my life — and yet I’m not supposed to take it personally? I should accept the idea that the bulk of my life from my twenties to sixties is somehow not personal?

While I fully understand that by “not taking it personally” we are better able to protect ourselves in work contexts that can often be challenging, threatening, and relentless, there are benefits to making our work-business personal.

Efficiency

The first relates to success and well-being at work. Take a moment and think about the people you’ve encountered whom you consider inspired, energized, and successful. They probably take work personally. And the flip side is that the people who have depersonalized their work are probably not the people you have enjoyed their experience. Your own experience thus indicates that success seems to be linked to taking your work personally.

But this is not about nuanced language and personal psychology; it is also about real business results.

Consider the connection between engaged employees and business performance.

What is engagement if not “taking it personally“? And when we consider the low levels of reported workplace engagement, it becomes clear that “not taking it personally” can have real costs.

Consider these statistics curated from GetVoIP: 64% of consumers want brands to connect with them. This is to say consumers rely on you taking your work-business personally as this is the best way to connect with them truly, and that is a relatively high percentage. It would be disadvantageous to be on the wrong side of such statistics.

Most of these consumers have grown increasingly aware of the facade or faux commitment from brands and can almost immediately tell when a brand takes them personally.

Ethics

Then there’s ethics. “Not taking it personally” lies at the heart of many corporate ethics scandals, from embezzling and accounting fraud to issues of worker safety and environmental protection. It’s when executives and teams adopt the mindless notion of “it’s not personal, it’s business” that they absolve themselves of their responsibilities as social actors, custodians of the planet, and guardians of the well-being of their employees, customers, and communities.

For these reasons and more, it seems clear to me that if we are to fulfil our responsibilities and obligations as executives — and our potential as leaders — we need to take things deeply personally. Put simply; in a depersonalized workforce employees are likely treated poorly.

Now, of course, there is a big, big difference between taking it personally and not being able to manage your boundaries. There is a distinction between having a passion for your job and attaching so much self-worth to it. Not being able to protect yourself psychologically, taking every mishap and mistake to heart that it penetrates the core of your self-esteem isn’t a good thing. If work becomes too dominant a part of your identity, that can also be dangerous.

But surely, there’s an appropriate happy medium to be found; a place somewhere between workaholism and anesthetizing the spirit.

Making it Personal

Going back to our manager at the beginning of this article, I wish I had said a few things to him:

  1. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t overly introject this as a failure that is a representation of your value and worth as a person.
  2. Your life and your career are not defined by this.
  3. But do be disappointed. Be frustrated.
  4. Seek to understand what happened; to know if you could develop your management and leadership. Do seek to learn from this experience.

But please, please don’t drop that soul-crushing curtain of “it’s not personal.” because it is.

Losing an employee or a business deal is the same as losing a friend or a relationship you’ve invested. Being aloof doesn’t make you professional, in-fact being sensitive helps you relate better to employee and customer needs.

Yes, if you take work personally, you will get hurt along the way. You will be disappointed, be let down, and sometimes wonder if it is worth it.

But just like that other great mystery of life — being in love — what really is the alternative? To not love at all, to never be heartbroken? Surely not.

To not take it personally so as never to be disappointed? Surely not.

For your own sake, for the people who work with you, and for the sake of humanity, this is your life. Take it — all of it — personally.

Entrepreneurship – The Need To Address Our Society’s Greatest Needs

For a country like Nigeria (where over 80 million live below $1 a day), most entrepreneurs won’t want to hear “forget about the profit and focus on addressing needs”. The truth is, most of them become “entrepreneurs” in the first place because of the profit and nothing more. And that’s why the majority don’t stand the test of time.

An entrepreneur who wants to stay relevant for long MUST seek to solve problems!

Sorry to burst your bubble; Entrepreneurship is not a poverty alleviation scheme!

Entrepreneur.com described an entrepreneur as “an initiator, a challenger and a driver. Someone that creates something new, either an initiative, a business or a company”.

Note that the above definition didn’t call an entrepreneur someone looking for a way out of poverty.

Of course, money is necessary too. But it shouldn’t be the main driving force – that should be problem-solving.

There is an urgent need to have entrepreneurship redefined and mindset re-engineering for entrepreneurs, especially in this part of the world.

Renowned English business tycoon and the founder of Virgin Group, Richard Branson, said he always encourage entrepreneurs to “focus on how their business ideas will help others. If your business genuinely improves people’s lives, success will follow.”

There you have it – solve a problem first, and success will follow.

And as long as people have problems, they will continue to be on the lookout (consciously and subconsciously) for solutions. Imagine their happiness and how they’d’ embrace whoever comes with the solution.

Convenience is the new cool

To most people who grew up a few decades ago, technology is teaching this generation laziness and instant gratification. Are you hungry? Place an order from your phone. Do you need to see a movie? Netflix and chill. Need to go out? Call Uber (or Bolt).

To them, it might be laziness; but to this generation, it is making lives more comfortable and better. It is solving age-long human problems. And the good news for new entrepreneurs is, there are still more of such problems to be solved, leveraging on technology.

Tips to Help Entrepreneurs identify Problems and create Solutions

Sometimes, identifying the seemingly apparent problems in the society can be challenging. What’s even more challenging is creating a solution to the problem.

Here are few insights to help with these

a. Focus on must-have, not nice-to-have

People are exposed to way too many options and information these days that it takes standing out to be noticed. If it’s not a solution or a must-have, people will forget about your business even before they see it.

They see nice-to-have products every day, so nothing you do will move them. Plus if it’s nice-to-have, then it’s most likely not solving a problem that has not been solved before.

But give them a must-have, something they will soon come to realize they “can’t do without.”

b. Solve real, everyday Problems

Please take a moment and imagine our world without Amazon, Google, Netflix, Uber and the likes. Unlivable right?

Well, some 20-30 years ago, we lived the same world without them. But finding answers to questions was a problem for which Google provided a solution; online shopping was impossible, and Amazon came through for the world; there was no on-demand streaming service, so it wasn’t easy to see all your favourite shows and movies in one place until Netflix came through.

What problems is the world your society facing, and what are you doing to solve them as an entrepreneur?

c. Make sure you’re Passionate about this problem you want to solve

Then there is passion – the only thing that would keep you going when it becomes challenging. Successful entrepreneurs build solutions in areas where they have passion.

The co-founder of Dropbox, Drew Houston said: “The happiest and most successful people I know don’t just love what they do, they’re obsessed with solving an important problem, something that matters to them”. It couldn’t have been better said.

You don’t start a business and expect to take off the next day. Most of the successful businesses you know today went through weeks, months and even years of struggle before they finally became successful. The Shoe Dog, for instance, tells the story of Phil Knight’s struggle in building Nike to the household name it is today.

But, amid the challenges and struggles, what helps entrepreneurs to keep going is their passion for what they do.

Some Entrepreneurs who became successful after solving problems

1. Irene Agbontaen (TTYA)

entrepreneurship redefined

5’11 tall, Irene is the brand behind the London-based Taller Than Your Average. The fashion brand specializes in styling women that are 5’9 and above tall, a demographic that had been underserved.

Irene herself had found it difficult to find clothes that fit her due to her height. For her and other tall women like her, they either don’t get what they want or have to add extensions to the clothes they buy. It was a struggle.

The frustration from her own experience pushed Irene to establish to TTYA in 2013 for tall, fashionable women. Tall women lives matter!

She has made it to the cover of Vogue Magazine (the dream of many in the fashion industry). She is an inspiration to many women around the globe.

For Irene, her personal experience pointed her to the problem, and she went to create a product that seeks to solve it. And there is no questioning her passion.

2. Barclay Paul (Impact Africa Industries)

entrepreneurship redefined

Every May 28 is a day set aside to create menstrual hygiene awareness and to draw attention to challenges women and young girls face during menstruation.

One of such challenges is the fact that women in some underdeveloped countries do not have access to sanitary pads, so they end up using unsafe and unhygienic alternatives.

Paul in Kitale, Kenya, saw this trend and the danger it poses so he decided to start manufacturing reusable and affordable sanitary pads as a way of addressing the challenge.

Today, his company supplies these sanitary pads to other countries like South Sudan and Uganda with its current annual revenue standing at $300k.

But it all began with providing access to sanitary pads to women who couldn’t afford it.

3. Victoria Alonsoperez (IEETech)

entrepreneurship redefined

Victoria Alonsoperez is an Uruguayan entrepreneur who founded the social enterprise, IEETech. She developed the Chipsafer, which is a platform for monitoring cattle health risks autonomously and remotely.

The device uses sensors to collect data about the health of livestock which can be converted into actionable information to help farmers prevent an outbreak and provide better care to their livestock.

This groundbreaking technology helps in preventing the death of cattle and generate more revenue.

Also, Chipsafer helps farmers to remotely monitor their livestock to know where they are and what they are doing when there is no one with them.

Farmers will not forget Victoria in a hurry.

4. Andrew Foote (Sanivation)

entrepreneurship redefined

This is another social enterprise project that is making a huge impact. Sanivation is committed to improving the entire health, dignity and environment of urbanizing communities located in East Africa using safe, clean and efficient sanitation services.

Sanitation remains a significant problem in most parts of the world, including Africa. With more people migrating from rural to urban areas, mismanagement, poor regional planning, conflict etc. cities have become stretched to their limits forcing people to live in unhygienic conditions.

Sanivation, therefore, addresses this problem by installing container-based toilets in homes for a small monthly service fee. The wastes from such toilets are then processed into environment-friendly fuel which people can still use instead of coal.

The model has been adopted in refugee camps, and Andrew hopes to serve 1 million people by the end of 2020.

Shit business, as they say, is serious business (provided it’s addressing a need).

5. Aisha R. Pandor (SweepSouth)

entrepreneurship redefined

Aisha is a successful South African and co-founder of SweepSouth. SweepSouth is a venture-backed renowned online tech startup for booking and managing home cleaning services.

Most people don’t have the time to clean their homes or offices daily. And for most people, they would rather someone come in to do the job on-demand rather than have a full in-house cleaner. SweepsSouth was created for people like this.

Launched in 2014, SweepSouth links buyers and sellers of domestic cleaning services. As a result, the product helped those who needed cleaners find one at an affordable rate and create jobs for unemployed and underemployed youths.

” SweepSouth won the SiMODiSA Startup SA pitching prize and later became the first South African startup to be accepted into the prestigious 500 Startups accelerator based in Silicon Valley in San Francisco”, says the World Economic Forum.

They all have something in common – they identified problems, created products that sought to solve them, and then profits followed. Now, that’s the right order.

Conclusion

Those are just 5 of the uncountable entrepreneurs out there hitting success by simply finding a solution to a problem.

Problems will never finish. Most times, the solution to one problem often creates another. So, there will be problems yearning for a solution around us.

The Covid19 pandemic is one that we all can relate to. While the world was hit by one of the biggest pandemic ever forcing us all to stay at home, smart entrepreneurs saw needs that needed to be met. Some had to start creating face masks, hand sanitizers and the other things that could help prevent the spread of the virus.

The pandemic meant some of us had to work from home—a difficult but necessary decision for most companies.

Entrepreneurs who had remote work tools created massive awareness for their products to make working from home more comfortable.

Shops were closed. Offices shut down. Banks and other financial institutions went on an indefinite break. Movement was prohibited. Social gathering was a taboo. The world became a complete shadow of itself. Yet, in the midst of it, entrepreneurs who sought to solve problems were unstoppable.

For instance, Eric Yuan, the founder of the video-conferencing platform, Zoom saw his worth grew by over $2.5 billion during the pandemic. Steve Balmer, Microsoft CEO became $15.7 billion richer, and Jeff Bezos added $48 billion to his net worth, all during the pandemic.

So, the pandemic is no excuse. It’s an opportunity as it is changing the world from how we used to know it and creating a new norm.

And with technology at our disposal in this dispensation, we are unstoppable.

In the end, look well and hard around and seek to help make lives easier leveraging on readily available technological resources, and watch success come chasing you.

So, don’t just start another business. Instead, solve a real problem in the society.

How to Grow Your Small Business with Email Marketing: A Comprehensive Guide

Grow your Business With Email Marketing: The Complete Guide

Let’s take a look at the complete guide on how you can grow your small business with email marketing, one step at a time

1. Set Your Email Campaign Goal

The success of any digital marketing campaign begins with setting a goal. As that’s the only way you can assess your effort at the end of the day.

Think of it as a journey. You know before you set out on a trip, you must first determine your destination. No one begins a journey first before deciding a destination.

So, what do you want to achieve with email marketing? Sure, you want to grow your business. But how do you intend to assess performance at the end of your campaign?

Who are your targets for the campaign, what do they do and what action do you want them to take after opening the mail? All of these and more you need to know before you set out.

Email marketing is goal-driven, so you must set your goals to get the best of it.

2. Choose Your Email Marketing Service Provider

The success of your email marketing campaign may depend on your email marketing service provider. Why you need to spend time to research on the right one to use for your business.

The most popular service provider in the industry at the moment is MailChimp. But popularity does not necessarily mean it’s the best for you.

Also, if you are entirely new to email marketing, you may have some difficulties navigating through some of those email marketing. Why you must do proper research and choose the one that works for you.

Other email marketing service providers are Zoho campaigns, ActiveCampaign, GetResponse and so on.

3. Create an Effective Optin

To send mails to your customers, you need their emails. And this is arguably the most challenging part of email marketing.

It would help if you devised an attractive way to get your customers to sign up to your email campaigns. How many times have you been on a website and just before you leave a message pops up asking to sign up to their newsletters? You must have seen that often.

Now, that’s one of the ways also to get your customers to sign up join your email list. But it’s not enough to just tell people to sign up to “receiving regular subtle adverts” from you. They won’t. So, you will have to make it as attractive as possible.

That brings us to the concept of lead magnet. What do your customers or target audience need and probably won’t mind paying for? How about you offer to give them free? This could be in the form of an ebook, a free course or an irresistible discount.

So, you provide this offer on your website or landing page (which your email service providers will give you) and tell your customers to enter their emails to have it delivered to them. And that’s it, free emails of your customers at your disposal.

4. Email Segmentation

Now, this is very important in the success of your email campaign. Email is a very personal means of communication, and you may not be able to personalize your message if you don’t break them into appropriate segments.

For instance, you run an online store that sells men, women and children clothes. You do realize that the contents that will appeal to men may not move women.

Another example is, say you run an international brand that sells to customers in different parts of the world. You want to break your audience into segments for several reasons.

One, customers in Africa don’t use the same time zone as those in America. So you want to ensure that each customer receives at the best time appropriate for such in their countries.

Also, the choice of words or lingua and specific needs come into play when writing for people from different parts of the world.

The long and short of this is that email marketing is data-driven. It begins and ends with data, so pay close attention to data and let influence your decisions.

Don’t let the word ‘data’ scare you. Basically, get all necessary information about your audience (age, location, gender etc.) and let it all influence how you sort them into categories so your mails can be personalized to your audience.

Don’t forget – “Marketers who segment their campaigns note about 760% increase in revenue”.

5. Writing Your Mail

You remember the examples we gave at the beginning? – Ope from Cowrywise, Uche from Bolt and the rest. You know you don’t see them coming to your mails every time to sell to you. Most times, they come like a friend trying to advise you.

In the same manner, don’t come to your audience advertising every time. They will get tired of your mails and stop opening them.

Instead, come with tips, advice, information and other things that will help them. You can do this and still subtly promote your business, and they will gladly click that link.

Here are a few tips to help you write a good mail that will keep your readers opening your emails and taking the actions you want them to take

  • Make sure your headline is irresistible

Your customer receives tons of emails every day, and you can bet they won’t open them all (do you open all your mails?) Statistics show that an average user only opens about 17.8% of their correspondences. And your mail can make it to that small percentage if you can pay close attention to your headline.

You can make it informative, thought-provoking, answer-seeking, engaging or simply combine all. Don’t forget to keep it short too so the whole text can appear on your readers’ screens (usually mobile devices).

  • Make it Personal

How does it feel seeing a brand mentioning your name in the emails they sent to you. Cool right? Now, go and do likewise.

Call your customers by their names and not the generic tag ‘customer’.

“But what if I have over 1,000 customers, how am I supposed to type their names one by one?” Even if you have two customers, you don’t need to type your customer’s name when you’re sending mails provided you have their names in the email list you’re using. There is a simple tag you will insert in the mail that will automatically the customer’s name in the mail they receive. Yeah, power of technology.

  • Keep your goal in mind

Remember it all begins with a goal? Make sure you keep that goal in mind as you write. Don’t deviate from it.

For instance, if you want your customers to click a link after opening the mail, you have to ensure you add such link in your mail with a clear call to action.

  • Don’t send yet, run a test

Before hitting the send button to all your subscribers, you need to run a test first and measure reception.

Most of the times, you will have more than one idea for your campaign, especially for the headline. So, run what is called A/B testing of the two ideas and assess how your audience responds to them. The result would then determine what you would use for the actual campaign.

6. Measure your Campaign

This is where you examine how well your campaign has performed. And how you assess the campaign will depend on your set goals.

Here are the significant metrics with which you can measure your email marketing campaign

  • Open Rate

The percentage of your subscribers that opened the mail.

  • Click-through rate

The percentage of subscribers that clicked a link in your mail.

  • Conversion rate

The percentage of subscribers that completed the required action after clicking the link in your mail.

  • Bounce rate

The percentage of subscribers that, for some reasons, did not receive your mail.

  • Opt-out

The number of customers who chose to unsubscribe from your email list after your last mail.

  • Email sharing or forwarding rate

The percentage of customers who shared your mail on social media or forwarded it other mails.

  • Overall ROI

The percentage of profit made from an email campaign as against the amount spent on the campaign.

  • Mobile Open rate

The percentage of subscribers who open your mail on their mobile devices

Conclusion

Remember, every email campaign is not an opportunity to sell. Resist the urge to sell all the times. Like Justin Rondeau said, email remains “one of the best ways to move a lead to a prospect, a prospect to a buyer and a buyer to a consistent customer”.

So, don’t rush the process. Gradually take your prospects journey with you from their current state (prospect) to the destination (consistent customer).

Price and Its Place in Marketing

Price details value. It’s the first thing everyone wants to know. How much was it?

It defines status. Shoppers want to brag about how expensive a product is or how well they bargained on a deal?

Price is an intricate part of any business process, as it sets the market value of the product or service rendered by a business.

This is why pricing is integrated into a company’s marketing plan.

While marketing is the summary of activities that promote the buying and selling of products and services, price is essential to marketing.

The price determines if a deal would close.

Now, the aim of marketing is costumer satisfaction and business profit.

This definition makes it look easy, but marketing entails a whole lot. It makes coming up with a product idea look easy.

Drawing up a marketing plan, now that’s real work.

As an entrepreneur, you have to anticipate consumer needs and proffer solutions that are timely and more efficient in other to attract customers and make sales.

Then you have to consider the cost of acquiring goods, manufacturing, marketplace, competition, market condition, brand, and quality of the product.

Then you have to consider other factors such as, the product, place and promotion in other to determine the price.

These four Ps are the pillars in marketing: Product, price, place, promotion.

  1. Product refers to all services designed to meet consumer need. The product design, range and quality are put into consideration under this aspect of marketing decisions.
  2. Price refers to the amount paid by the consumer, and it takes into consideration the customer’s perceived value of the product.
  3. Place describes the channel of distribution and location of the business as well as other logistics.
  4. Promotion entails all details and channels for advertising and PR.

Marketing strategies

Marketing strategies can be based on any of the following marketing orientation:

  1. Product
  2. production
  3. Sales
  4. Marketing orientation which could be customer orientation or organizational.

Your product may meet an immediate need of a customer or satisfies a customer’s wants, but demand chain determines sales. And demand is only possible when consumers have the buying capacity.

In the Nigerian Market, one of the ways businesses have approached demand-related problems in Nigeria is by creating cheaper options.

The market reacted unexpectedly in what is termed the Sachet economy. or as one user described it; ‘the sachetization of Nigeria market’.

SEE: 5 Developmental Strategies For Small Businesses

What is a Sachet Economy?

Sachet economy refers to the practice of buying consumer goods in single use packs. The term ‘Sachet Economy’ Derived it’s name from the mode of packaging.

Pricing Strategy

Note that your pricing strategy differs from pricing tactics. Your pricing strategy is a long term pricing model that is sustainable, while pricing tactics are short term goals to enable you to clear up inventory or beat competitive prices. Here are seven price strategies to consider:

Customer-based pricing —Recognizing varied customer base and differentiating prices to cut across the different market.

Relationship-based pricing —In other to attract new customers and maintain older clients marketers adjust pricing based on customer relationship with the business.

Operational based pricing —simply calculating your costs and adding a mark-up the goal is to match demand and supply

Revenue oriented prices —setting a price with the aim of Maximizing profit in other to create surplus income.

Optional pricing — Creating product variety in other to give the consumer an option to add or remove certain features in other to alter the bargain.

Value-Based Pricing — Setting a price based on how much the customer believes what you’re selling is worth, luxury brands and art creations are mostly priced based on perceived value.

Social oriented pricing —These prices are set to discourage or encourage certain social behaviors.

Pricing tactics

Giveaways:

This is a tactic used by marketers to attract or reward loyal customers. Depending on the model of your business, giveaways require a level of commitment from the client, in terms of participating in raffle draws.

Price bundling:

You’ve seen this often. Buy one get one free. Markets merge products that attract sales with other products in other to encourage sales.

Discounted sales:

Perhaps the biggest sales season is the black Friday discount sale. This is mostly done to discard old inventory and is often seasonal. The catch is these products are hardly truly discounted. It’s a tactic to attract customers to believe they’re getting more for less. Few brands run honest discount.

Penetration pricing:

This is a tactic employed by new brands. They enter the market at low prices and then increase it over time. Underdogs use this approach to poach customers from competitors. A good example is Bigi Cola disrupting the Lagos market, and threatening brands like Pepsi and Coca-Cola. How? At a time when Coke introduced a solo bottle for 100Naira, and bigger boy for 150Naira Bigi offered to sell at 100 for a bottle size slightly bigger than coke’s bigger boy. Bigi also targeted their promo to benefit hawkers and retail sellers, a strategy that had never before been used.

Price skimming:

Like penetration approach, but this time, brands approach the market with slightly higher prices. These prices drop when competition enters the market.

Limited offers: Time-bound product and limited offers create a sense of importance and has had a great influence on the minds of consumers.

There are no bad tactics; there are, however, tactics that do not suit your brand. Luxury brands avoid giveaway approach but may opt for the sales bundle tactics.

Mistakes in Pricing

The market is never stable as a result, brands have to constantly evolve to meet the market demand and consumer values.

The factors that guarantee the success of a pricing strategy are fleeting.

When Cowbell introduced sachet milk in the Nigerian market, it was well-received. It made a huge mark on the childhood stories of many Nigerians. In 2020, brands who used the same strategy met a rather hostile audience.

This LinkedIn user says that; Although producing in sachets might be the best marketing strategy for Nigeria, especially with a high inflation rate – it leads to an increase in trials and sales among the underprivileged. It is a terrible idea for the environment as these types of plastics are almost impossible to recycle.

Before you copy a brand pricing tactics, consider your users and social influences. Run close surveys and take note of feedback. This would save cost and business image.

Conclusion

Pricing is as important to the business as it is to the consumer, so it’s worth studying. Your goal as an entrepreneur is to make sales. Slow on sales? Try a new marketing strategy or change tactics!

One of Nigeria’s most recurrent campaign promises by all the administrations post-military era has been the “Improved Power Supply” project. And from all indications, politicians would include it in the 2023 elections campaign promises as it has remained an unmet promise.

Nonetheless, as an entrepreneur, such an unmet need creates a much-needed business opportunity to explore and make a good return on investment, especially in an industry such as energy – an industry with many clients.

Reports by Electricity Generating Companies reveal that the average power supply in Nigeria is 3,851MW, which is not even enough to serve Lagos effectively.\

All that tells you is that the power problem in Nigeria is not changing anytime soon, and the scenario leaves us all with alternative power sources for homes and businesses.

Some alternative energy sources that you can use in your homes and businesses include renewal energy sources such as biofuels, solar power, wind energy, biomass energy, etc.

The market for renewable energy is enormous, with Solar Energy taking the lead here in Nigeria. Asides from Solar, you could participate in the biofuel market, which doesn’t require much capital to get started and promises a very high return on investments.

Here are some of the ways you can be a part of the renewable energy business:

Solar Powered:

  • The assembly and installation of solar installations
  • Sales of solar panel parts
  • Solar panel maintenance
  • Sales, installations and assembling of other peripheral equipment such as inverters, charge controllers, etc.

The four items above make up the core businesses in the solar panel industry, and market entry requirements for any of them is pretty low.

A United Nations report estimated that over 11 billion tons of waste are collected all over the world generating $140 billion. And since Nigeria is a developing country, we are definitely a significant producer of wastes.

In Nigeria, about 50 billion plastic bags are used every year

Also, according to Going Green Recycling Company, here are some waste management data that might interest you

  • Every hour, approximately 200,000 plastic bags are land-filled
  • A family of four uses an average of 1,500 plastic bags in a year
  • At least 267 different species of marine life are adversely affected by plastic pollution
  • 225 million tons of non-biodegradable plastics are produced annually worldwide that destroy our environment continuously
  • A single-use plastic bag has an average life span of 12 minutes, and destructive span of about 1,000 years

This business, though seemingly dirty, has what it take to make you immensely rich as not so many are looking its direction.

What most people don’t know is no waste is absolute waste. Animal dung are used as fertilizers; plastics and polythenes can be recycled to make other plastic products. So, the next time you see those plastic drink bottles and the rest in your gutters, what you are seeing is…

Imagine having a 9-5 job in Lagos Island and living in Lagos Mainland? You have to live home very early in the morning and return home late in the night, every day.

Now, that’s what an average Lagosian is going through. And the story is almost the same in Abuja and other major cities in the country.

This means that an average working-class person in Nigeria doesn’t have enough time to cook breakfast or dinner. That leaves them with the option of eating out.

There are several options for them when it comes to eating out. The famous eateries with unnecessarily expensive food; the mama put with cheap food but not so clean environment, and then there are food trucks that seem to balance it all but then, it’s relatively scarce.

And that’s why it’s one of the untapped business opportunities in Nigeria that you should consider.

There are varieties of food options to consider for this business. You can choose to do softcore such as coffee, snacks, tea and all. Or you can go all-in by doing Nigerian meals such as jollof rice, fried rice, yam and egg, indomie noodle and so on.

But I can’t cook. Honestly, that’s the least of your worries in 2020. You can take a short course on cooking the meals you intend to sell. Or watch a couple of Youtube videos and experiment a couple of times.

The location of your business should influence your choice of food.

And talking about location, it’s essential that this business is located around industrial or work environment, and not residential areas for obvious reasons.

One of the most exciting parts of this business is that it is cost-effective in the long run. You can cut by almost 70% because you don’t need to make sitting arrangements so you’d need less space.

Estimated Capital for Foodtruck or Container Business

  • Food truck: N2,000,000 – N5,500,000
  • Miscelleneous expenses: N100,000 – N200,000

  • Monthly: N200,000
  • Annually: N2,500,000

One of the most exciting parts of this business is that you’d rarely run out of funds because the government is always willing to support agriculture and so are banks too.

Nigeria may be a giant of Africa in many things but not agriculture, at least not anymore.

The world has evolved in terms of agriculture, and Nigeria has a lot of catching up to do. And that’s where you come in with your organic farming.

There is a high demand for organic food worldwide. So, let’s go farming.

Estimated Capital for Organic Farming Business

  • N400,000 – N1,500,000

Projected ROI on Organic Farming Business

  • About 70% of Capital

Do you know you can build a website from scratch and resell it? Well, yeah, you can. That’s what website flipping entails.

Online is the new market, and every business is trying to build its store there. They obviously need websites and would be willing to pay a reasonable amount for it.

Now, this involves being tech-savvy and having some coding skills. So, if you know your way around coding and can successfully build a website, this is for you.

You can make up to 300% of the money spent on creating a website from selling it. Now, that’s a lot of money. But as lucrative as this business is, it is up there as one of the most untapped business ideas in Nigeria.

Some sites make it easy and fast to flip websites when you’re done building. Afternic, Freemarket and Flippa are among the popular ones.

For those that can’t write codes, you can still create WordPress blogs and resell. Yeah, you don’t need to be a web developer to create WordPress blogs. A couple of Youtube videos or maybe a short course is all you need to get started.

Estimated Capital for Domain or Website Flipping

  • N2,000 – N200,000

Projected ROI on Domain or Website Flipping

  • N400,000 – 1,000,000 over time
